Here are the top stories in San Antonio today:
- During last week's shooting tragedy in Uvalde, Jacob Albarado was getting a haircut when he and his barber received text messages about the shooting. Albarado's wife, a teacher at Robb Elementary School, texted "There's an active shooter. Help. Love you." Albarado, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent, borrowed a gun from his barber and rushed to the scene. His wife "told him their daughter was locked in a school restroom... inside her classroom," so he "met up with two officers near the classroom." He told them, "We need to get the kids out of here… The shooter's over there. We need to get the kids out. This is our time." Albarado, who is now "hailed as a hero," said, "I was acting as a husband and a father." For more on this story, including an interview with Albarado, please visit: (CBS News)
- San Antonio's Solid Waste Management Department is giving away free mulch this month at the Bitters Brush Recycling Center, at 1800 Wurzbach Parkway. The center is open Monday-Sunday, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Besides regular mulch, "coarse ground mulch" will be given "on a first come, first serve basis." Although you don't have to be a solid waste customer to get free mulch, you must bring your own containers and pack and haul it away on your own. Also, "all loads must be covered by a tarp according to City Ordinance #2015-09-10-0760." (mySA)
- This month is Pride Month, and to celebrate the local LGBTQ+ community, individuals are invited to bike ride together around San Antonio on Saturday, June 4, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The purpose of the activity is "to empower and uplift the community while promoting exercise and wellness — even in the summer heat." The free event, led by the Team Taco Cycling Group, will start off with "a hype session and warmup" at Crockett Park, located at 1300 N. Main Ave. For more information, call 210-370-7743 or visit pridecentersa.org. (San Antonio Current)
- "The new San Antonio Language Academy (SALA)" at UTSA offers an opportunity to immerse yourself "in either Spanish, Korean or Japanese language and culture." The course is "designed for heritage speakers and intermediate- to advanced-level speakers who want to become fluent in one of the three languages, pursue a study abroad opportunity, build their resume or have a unique cultural experience." The first program, which includes all three languages, already started and will end on June 3, but the second program, "which will be offered in Spanish only," will run from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. during the week from June 13-July 1. To register, visit the SALA website, and for more information visit: (UTSA)
- La Niña Girasol (The Sunflower Girl) children's play, presented by The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, will premiere at the Teatro Salon in the Guadalupe Theater, located at 1301 Guadalupe St. The play, written by playwright J. Cesar Duenas and directed by Clint Taylor, is, according to Duenas, "a magical tale of family, history, and the struggle to keep their roots alive." For details on the playwright and director, as well as the play, visit: (Broadway World)
