Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:
- Starting Tuesday, Aug. 2, local residents will be able to provide their input on where in the city they would like to see public art installed. The City of San Antonio "has set aside... tax dollars for art" which are actually "bond dollars from the 2022 bond issue that voters passed." According to Krystal Jones, director of the City of San Antonio Department of Arts and Culture, there is "a historic $15.7 for public art as part of the bond." Residents can participate "through a series of meetings and Zoom calls" on Tuesdays in August and part of September. At that time, they will have "an opportunity to take a look at the capital improvement projects that are part of the overall bond and identify which of those projects they'd like to see public art installed," according to Jones. - A recent fire on San Antonio's Southwest side completely destroyed a home and a nearby mechanic shop on the 2500 block of Southcross Boulevard. According to firefighters, "windy conditions... posed a challenge and threatened to spread the fire to neighboring structures." As a result, they "called for more support, and CPS Energy crews cut the power on the block until the flames were under control." Fortunately, "the fire didn't spread to neighboring homes" and there were no injuries. (KSAT San Antonio)
- A protest "for abortion rights specifically for the City of San Antonio (COSA)" was recently held downtown by the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL). The protest was led by the group's organizer, Tori Ramirez, who said, "We are trying to get them to pass the GRACE Act, which would decriminalize abortion." Essentially "the GRACE Act would recommend that city funds not be used to report or investigate abortions. It wouldn't prevent investigations from happening, but city council would suggest that law enforcement make investigating abortions its lowest priority." Ramirez said, "We have to get this done because we don't even want one more person to die because they can't get abortion access." (Spectrum News)
- Haven for Hope is asking for "donations of bottled water, sports drinks, and electrolyte packets" for the homeless. They "can be dropped off" Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Haven for Hope location on 1 Haven for Hope Way. (KSAT San Antonio)
- Chef Ben Annotti from San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter's Tributary restaurant, located at 101 Bowie St., is offering "a new seasonal menu... that's focused on fresh seasonal ingredients." Dishes include "brussels sprouts with sweet potato curry, puffed rice and tamarind dressing and a Texas Garden salad featuring local greens, market produce, seasonal pickles, herbs and a Texas citrus vinaigrette." They also have new additions," such as "fried salt and pepper shrimp with fresh chilis, herbs and spicy comeback sauce in addition to a pairing of sweet tea-smoked pork belly and pimento cheese." The eatery is open daily "for breakfast, lunch and dinner." (San Antonio Current)
