Here are the top stories in San Antonio today:

  1. Dr. Vasan Ramachandran, public health researcher at Boston University, will start his new position as "founding dean of the new University of Texas School of Public Health San Antonio" on Thursday, Sept. 1. According to UTSA officials, "establishing the new School of Public Health and recruiting Ramachandran as dean 'introduces a new era for UTSA's and UT Health San Antonio's shared mission to serve the public good.'" Dr. Taylor Eighmy, UTSA president, said, "We seek to improve public health in close partnership with the city of San Antonio, Bexar County, our research and development partners, and the health care community." (FOX 7 Austin)
  2. Although it's still months away, "tickets for Lightscape at the San Antonio Botanical Garden are on sale now" and "are available for general admission, VIP experiences, and parking." This year's holiday event is planned from Nov. 11-Jan. 8 and will feature "the famous illuminated River Walk, drives through Windcrest, and now, the winding trail of dazzling lights at the botanical garden." For more information visit: (mySA)
  3. Another Dallas-based Twin Peaks sports bar will be opening in San Antonio on Monday, Aug. 22. The new bar will be located near IKEA at 3050 IKEA-RBFCU Parkway. Features will include "more than 65 flat screen TVs, a fire pit and patio alongside the draft beer and bar food." The menu will offer scratch-made "longtime favorites" like "hand-smashed burgers and beer-battered chicken tenders," along with "new menu items such as sweet and smoky ribs served with three cheese mac and cheese and creamy coleslaw." Once open, their hours will be Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m.-midnight, and Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m.-2 a.m. (San Antonio Current)
  4. BJ Novak, "Hollywood actor, writer, comedian and director" who starred on "The Office," was recently in San Antonio, where he "gave some shout-outs to Alamo Drafthouse and Santikos." The reason was probably "because both theater chains will be screening his new film 'Vengeance,' which comes out Friday, July 29." Novak, who was "dubbed honorary Texan" by Alamo officials, was "spotted" at the Alamo and Buc-ee's and posted on Instagram, "I had an incredible visit to the @officialalamo. I even got to hold Santa Ana's sword and ride Pee Wee Herman's bike." For a sneak peek of the film, see the trailer and visit: (KSAT San Antonio)
  5. When COVID-19 started, "Reuben Escobedo downloaded the famous TikTok app to check it out," but he never imagined that "his "90s parody rap skills" would go viral!" It started out "when a friend recommended it" to him and "he began taking some of his favorite rap songs from the 90s and adjusting the lyrics to fit how it feels for those who grew up during that time." His first one was "a parody of Naughty by Nature's 'O.P.P.'" about "people getting older," waking up with painful back and legs without doing anything, and he changed the title to "Old People Problems." When it "got 3.7 million views," he said, "wow, there's really an audience for this." He added, "From that point on, I started kind of playing with the problems many of us go through that we didn't think we would have as a kid. It's been pretty great." At 43, he doesn't see himself quitting his financial management job, but he's having a lot of fun! Check him out at official_reuben_e on TikTok and official_reuben_e on Instagram. (mySA)
