🌱 Juneteenth Monday SA Closures + Local YMCA Summer Leagues + SA NFL?

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in San Antonio.

Juneteenth commemorates "the date on which federal troops freed the last of the enslaved people in the United States" on June 19, 1865. In honor of that federal holiday, I will not be writing on Monday, June 20, so you will not see a newsletter on Tuesday, June 21. But I'll be back bright and early on Wednesday, June 22, with your local daily news and events! — Gabriela Cantu Couvillion

First, today's weather:

📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in San Antonio who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.

I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our San Antonio Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.

Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:

  1. "On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston to announce the freedom of enslaved people in the South." Since then, "African American communities" celebrate the event every year on June 19, or Juneteenth. Last year it officially "became a federal holiday... and is now celebrated across the U.S., thanks to a Texan woman named Opal Lee." In honor of the holiday, many offices will be closed on Monday, June 20. For a list of local closures visit: (TPR)
  2. The first Bud Light Pride River Parade and Celebration took place on Saturday, June 18, at the San Antonio Riverwalk. The event "was created by Visit San Antonio to promote the city's inclusion, encouragement, and support of the LGBTQ+ community to live openly with equal rights." To view photos of the event, please visit: (FOX 29)
  3. In honor of World Refugee Day, an event "sponsored by Refugee services of Texas" was held on Saturday, June 18, at Guadalupe Plaza, located at 1327 Guadalupe St. The celebration included "music, dance, poetry and more." Julie Thornton from Refugee Services of Texas, said, "World Refugee Day is a national celebration of folks that have come into the United States as refugees just to celebrate the diversity of the population that we're serving and kind of have an opportunity for people to come together and have a little bit of fellowship and activity. And I think just to really celebrate our world and what we're doing here in the city." (TPR)
  4. Last week, "the YMCA kicked off its inaugural Summer Youth Esports League" for kids ages 12-17, but if you missed it, "it's not too late to join." The summer program taking place at three local YMCA locations consists of two 8-week periods with a short break in between each, and although the first league already started, "players can still register to compete." For program details and for a list of activities and YMCA locations visit: (Subscription: mySA)
  5. For a while now, Mayor Ron Nirenberg has been hoping that "an NFL team will call San Antonio home." In May, "NFL on CBS asked its followers a question on which city is deserving of an NFL expansion team," and recently Mayor Nirenberg spoke "with KENS 5 about how San Antonio would be a great fit if there ever was an NFL expansion." He said, "Well I think the speculation about the NFL expanding is premature, but I wouldn't expect any mayor in any city in the country not to say, 'hey, my city would be great.'" He added, "As has been speculated for years, if there is a third team in Texas, it belongs in San Antonio." (mysanantonio.com)
