Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:
- Magik Theatre is partnering with Live from the Southside for its "'Kid's Korner Writing Program' to serve as official student arts reviewers." As part of the program, "student journalists will get to attend and review inspiring productions and submit articles to be featured in Live from the Southside's digital platform and magazine and on Magik Theatre's website and social media." They will also be able to participate in a summer workshop through the theater company's education department. Dr. Lisa Cortez Walden, Magik Theater's director of education said, "We are thrilled to offer an inspiring way to give back by partnering with Live from the Southside and offering these young student writers a unique opportunity to capture their shared and perhaps first-time experiences of watching live theater, one production at a time." The deadline to apply for a Magik Theatre reviewer is Monday, Jan. 31. For information on becoming a contributing writer for Live from The Southside, contact April Monterrosa at livefromthesouthside@gmail.com. For more details on the program, visit: (Broadway World)
- Betty White, who passed away Friday, Dec. 31, would have turned 100 on Monday, Jan. 17. To honor her birthday, the Animal Defense League is asking the community to please consider participating in the #BettyWhiteChallenge. The social media challenge asks that you "donate $5 to an animal rescue charity to continue White's legacy as an animal advocate." A local shelter to consider is the Animal Defense League (ADL), where you can also view "animals available for adoption and fostering" on their website at adltexas.org. - San Antonio mom, Ashley Martinez, became a Camp Gladiator "camper" in 2017 "after giving birth and struggling with simple tasks, such as walking up stairs and putting on her shoes." She said, "My body was really uncomfortable, and I needed to start doing things for myself again... whenever you work full time and have children, time never seems to present itself, but if your health is important to you, you have to find that time." Not only did Martinez lose 75 lbs. in 9 months, but she also found love, as she met her boyfriend at Camp Gladiator workouts and in March 2019, she started her own camp after becoming certified as a trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine. For more information and for upcoming Camp Gladiator events, visit: (San Antonio Magazine)
- Veteran stand-up comedian Kathleen Madigan will perform on Friday, Jan. 21 at 8 p.m., at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, located at 100 Auditorium Circle. Madigan's "last comedy special was Netflix's Bothering Jesus in 2016, where she makes fun of her home state of Missouri, her crazy parents and how fun it is to drink red wine while watching House Hunters." During the COVID-19 pandemic, she launched her podcast Madigan's Pubcast, but now she's ready to perform live again. Tickets for the event range from $34.50-$49.50.
