Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:

  1. Last week, Nicolas Barrón, a Northeast School of the Arts (NESA) student and a Las Casas Foundation representative, was awarded the title of "Best Performance by an Actor" during the "13th annual National High School Musical Theatre Awards," also known as "The Jimmy's." In addition to the award, he received $25,000 to use towards his education. Barron said, "I am so grateful for this opportunity to learn from my peers who've taught me so much in one week about life and craftsmanship." He added, "Representing San Antonio at this level was an honor and I'm so thankful for the support from family and friends and the Las Casas Foundation!" (mySA)
  2. Tyson Foods and H-E-B are donating "40,000 pounds of protein to the San Antonio Food Bank... to help fight hunger in San Antonio." Jason Nichol, chief customer officer at Tyson Foods, said, "We're proud to partner with H-E-B to donate protein to the San Antonio Food Bank so children in South Texas don't have to worry about where their next meal is coming from." Winell Herron, group vice president of public affairs, diversity, environmental affairs and hunger relief for H-E-B, said, "Since 1982, the H-E-B Hunger Relief program has donated more than one billion pounds of food to nonprofits in Texas and Mexico and partnering with Tyson and the San Antonio Food Bank is a great way to provide families with nutritious food to avoid hunger this summer." 3. Last August, The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and the Southwest School of Art (SSA) agreed to combine the two school programs to create a "new UTSA school focused on advancing the arts," and this July, the integration was finally completed. UTSA President Taylor Eighmy said, "We're grateful for the ongoing collaboration between both institutions, and we celebrate this final phase of integration so we can continue expanding meaningful arts programs for students and community members throughout San Antonio." He added, "This partnership not only advances our mission to create more opportunities for student success, but also helps further establish San Antonio as the cultural heart of Texas." (UTSA)
  4. On Tuesday, July 5, three people were shot "at a West side apartment on the 7700 block of Ingram Road "around 2:30 a.m." The victims were two teenaged girls and a male. One of the girls received "two gunshot wounds while the other had been shot multiple times." Unfortunately, one of them "later died from her injuries." The man suffered "a gunshot wound to the leg" and was hospitalized, but "his condition isn't available." As of now, "no arrests have been made" in the incident. (550 KTSA)
  5. A fire on Tuesday, July 5 "at a home off Kopplow Street near S. Flores Street" may have been caused by an arsonist. "The fire started around 3 a.m.," and when firemen arrived, they found the home "engulfed in flames." Fortunately, "no injuries were reported" and "crews were able to get the fire under control and make sure it didn't spread to neighboring homes." (FOX 29)
