Here are the top stories in San Antonio today:

  1. According to "YorkTest, a provider of at-home health tests," San Antonio's Rancho Diana is the sixth best park on the company's "list of the best (and worst) parks for hay fever." To come up with the ratings, the health and wellness company looked at "the five-day average for grass pollen counts at the country's 150 largest parks." For study details visit: (culturemap.com)
  2. Sad news at the San Antonio Zoo. "Bubba, a 28-year-old endangered Komodo dragon," died on Tuesday, July 5. Bubba, who weighed 185 pounds and was eight-and-a-half-feet long, was "the first exotic animal in the world to be treated with an innovative product created to reduce inflammation in joints." During his old age, his daily medical care regime included "acupuncture, massages and stem cell replacement." Per a post on the zoo's website, "Bubba will be missed by all of his caretakers and guests at the zoo." (San Antonio Current)
  3. Next month, Greg Simmons, sports director for KSAT 12, is going to be inducted into the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) Athletic Hall of Fame. Simmons, a 1974 graduate from SAISD's Jefferson High School, will be "one of six SAISD graduates to be inducted." In 1980 he joined the station as a sports reporter and since then, has become "one of the most notable sportscasters in San Antonio history." The event will take place on Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Alamo Convocation Center located at 110 Tuleta Drive. "Tickets are now on sale" and cost $35 each or $280 for a table of eight. 4. On Tuesday, July 5, a San Antonio man was killed after "he lit a 'mortar-style firework' on top of his head." The "accident occurred just after midnight in the 800 block of Harriman Place." According to police, "the man had been drinking with another person" when he lit the firework on his head, and it "exploded from the bottom of the tube, piercing his head." When ER arrived, he was unresponsive and unfortunately, he later died. (San Antonio Patch)
  5. The hearing for Homero Zamorano, Jr., who "was arrested on criminal charges related to his alleged involvement in human smuggling resulting in the death of 53 migrants found in a semi-trailer," was waived for now. The hearing was originally scheduled for Wednesday, July 6, and he was going "to learn if he was eligible for bail," but as of now, there is no information on when it is going to be scheduled again.
