The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in San Antonio.
Good morning, everybody. It's me, Gabriela Cantu Couvillion, your host of the San Antonio Daily — back in your inbox with all the most important things happening in town these days.
First, today's weather:
Mostly sunny and hot. High: 101 Low: 77.
📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in San Antonio who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.
I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our San Antonio Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.
Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:
- Attention vegan lovers! "The popular plant-based chicken chain," Project Pollo, will be opening a 13th location soon at 9390 Huebner St.! "A ribbon cutting" ceremony will be held on Thursday, Aug. 18, while the "grand opening will take place on" Saturday, Aug. 20. On that day, gift cards for a year's worth of free Project Pollo will be given out to the first 50 guests. Now, if you just can't wait, they will also have "a soft opening" on Tuesday, Aug. 9, with "the new full menu, including the famous crispy, plant-based 'chickn' sandwiches, popcorn 'chikn', loaded fries, oat-based macaroni and cheese, creamy milkshakes, and much more." - To honor his father, Chris Cowley from San Antonio will be participating in "The Coast 2 Coast 4 Cancer Ride, an annual cross country bike ride that helps raise money for cancer research." He said, "Personally, my father is battling cancer right now. He has bladder cancer. And so, I see what he's going through on a day-to-day basis. And it's been a struggle. You know, it's tough. I mean, I think anyone who goes through this knows that it's a difficult situation." On Wednesday, Sept. 7, Cowley, along with "the Bristol Myers Squibb team," will commence "a 3,000 miles/route bike ride from Cannon Beach, Oregon to Long Branch, New Jersey." This year's "goal is to raise more than $1 million." If you'd like to donate, please click here and visit: (KSAT San Antonio)
- The city of San Antonio is not only full of rich culture, but it's also "a kaleidoscope of history, food, art, and more." There's so much to do in the Alamo City for locals and visitors alike! "These eight highlights cover some of the not-to-be-missed experiences you should prioritize while in this immersive destination." Check them out at: (culturemap.com)
- The mother of a 6-year-old girl from San Antonio who "died due to kidney failure, pneumonia and malnutrition" is being charged with child abuse. On Oct. 3, 2021, Stephanie Jimenez called the San Antonio Police department to say that her "child was unresponsive." She told them her daughter fell and hit her head, then started throwing up after dinner." According to police, the child looked small for her age, and seemed malnourished, and had "lice and lice eggs and body dirt." The medical examiner confirmed "that the cause of death was neglect and malnutrition," along with "kidney failure and pneumonia." The mother is now facing "charges of child abuse (serious bodily injury) by omission." (KENS5.com)
- Recently "Yelp rounded up the 25 most photographed places in San Antonio, deeming them the 'most Instagram-worthy businesses' of all time." It was no surprise that the list was made up mostly "of restaurants, ranging from San Antonio mainstays to buzzy fine dining," as "San Antonio loves to eat!" Topping the list was "Mi Tierra Cafe & Bakery, one of the most iconic restaurants in the city" and "a favorite for locals, as well as a popular stop for tourists wanting to experience the spirit of San Antonio." Next in line were downtown venues "like Boudro's (No. 3), The Esquire Tavern (No. 8), and La Panaderia (No. 9)," along with "The Guenther House at No. 17 and San Antonio's oldest restaurant, Schilo's Delicatessen... at No. 24," among others.
