Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:

  1. Unfortunately, Bexar County has a particularly problematic history of domestic violence and each year, The San Antonio Police Department "receives an average of 40,000 calls" related to family violence. "Last year, District 8 City Council representative Manny Peláez submitted three proposals for policy changes related to family violence, human trafficking and education." In December, "a new Texas law went into effect" that "sets minimum standards for how schools teach kids about teen dating and family violence, child abuse, and sex trafficking" and "to give it his signature, Gov. Greg Abbott required that parents be allowed to opt their child out." If you or someone you know is suffering from domestic violence, please call 1-800-799-7233. For more information on the proposals and for a recorded interview with Rep. Peláez and Jenny Hixon, violence prevention program manager for the San Antonio Metropolitan Health Department, please visit: (Texas Public Radio)
  2. George Lopez Tacos are now available to San Antonians and can be delivered right to your door "via food delivery apps like DoorDash and UberEats." The online-only restaurant is "backed by the comedian and actor" George Lopez, and "operated by online food concept company NextBite." The menu features plates such as "La Chingona," which includes three corn tortilla tacos with chicken, beef or pork carnitas, or "La Más Cabrona" taco plate with your choice of meat and toppings like roasted peppers or fire-roasted jalapeños. Lopez launched the online site in June 2021, which already services 80 locations nationwide. "George Lopez Tacos operates out of already existing local kitchens," but "it's not clear" where they cook. However, "GrubHub puts the restaurant at an office center at 7824 Mainland Drive." 3. Something is brewing in the Alamo City! The 9th annual San Antonio Coffee Festival is coming to town on Saturday, Feb. 12! However, due to ongoing construction downtown, this year it will be held at Travis Park on 301 E. Travis St. instead of the usual spot at the historic La Villita. Linda Brewster, the festival's founder, said "The growth of at-home coffee brewing hit a record high during the pandemic, and San Antonio was no exception, so we are grateful that we were able to work with the city to remain in downtown and provide a large open space to accommodate and support the many new coffee businesses here." Depending on the construction, Brewster expects the festival to return to La Villita in the future. This year's family-friendly festival will feature food, music, art activities and of course, lots of java! VIP and general admission tickets are on sale now. VIP tickets are $25 and allow early entry at 9 a.m. The $10 tickets include a five-tasting flight and admission at 10 a.m. The event will end at 3 p.m. For more information, visit: (San Antonio Current)
  4. If you want to lose weight but don't know where to start, Innovative Lasers of Houston at San Antonio can help you through your weight-loss journey. The medical facility uses the Zerona laser, "a safe alternative to invasive and painful surgeries for fat reduction" that is "FDA-approved." The procedure includes "six 20-minute sessions over the course of two weeks" in which "excess fat in the hips, waist, thighs, or upper arms" is removed "without the negative side effects of surgery or fat freezing methods." Fern's siblings quickly got adopted at the city shelter, except for Fern, the runt of the litter. Sadly, Fern was placed on the city shelter's euthanasia list because she was extremely emaciated and in bad shape. San Antonio Pets Alive's lifesaving team had one hour to try to save her from being killed. Thankfully, a foster volunteer stepped up at the very last minute. Fern is now available for adoption, and we would love to find her the forever family she deserves. If you are interested in adopting Fern, please visit Adopt a Dog – San Antonio Pets Alive! to complete an adoption application or email adopt@sanantoniopetsalive.org if you have any questions."
