The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in San Antonio.

Hello again, neighbors! It's me, Gabriela Cantu Couvillion, your host of the Daily. Let's get this Monday started off right, with a quick guide to the most important things happening in town...

First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny and hot. High: 102 Low: 76.

📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in San Antonio who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.

I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our San Antonio Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.

Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:

  1. The U.S. Department of Labor recently awarded a $2,983,433 "Apprenticeship Building America grant" to "The City of San Antonio's unprecedented workforce initiative, Ready to Work." The purpose of the grant program is "to support registered apprenticeship programs and to enable workers to find a reliable pathway to the middle class." Mayor Ron Nirenberg said, "We are honored to receive the Apprenticeship Building America grant, which reflects the Department of Labor's endorsement of San Antonio's voter-approved Ready to Work program." He added, "Together we will improve the lives of our friends and neighbors and drive the economic health of our community forward." (Press Release Desk)
  2. Several HEB grocery stores in Texas now have a home department area, including the new H‑E‑B plus! located at 20935 US Hwy 281. On Thursday, July 14, the store launched its Home by H-E-B department which features the "two new product lines, Haven + Key and Texas Proud." For more details, visit the store and: (Spectrum News)
  3. The San Antonio Zoo's corpse flower "named La Llorona is "starting to stink!" According to zoo officials, it "smells like wet garbage," although some say, "it smells like a decaying corpse." As bad as that sounds, it's "actually a good thing" because when the plant starts "to emit its famous stench," that means it's "close to blooming" and "the bloom could last up to four days." Smell for yourself at the San Antonio Zoo located at 3903 N. Saint Marys St., or see for yourself by watching "a live stream of the flower...by clicking on the player" at: (KSAT San Antonio)
  4. On Friday, July 15, 23-year Jose Armando Perez "was killed in a rollover crash in South Bexar County." The accident "happened around 2 a.m. near the intersection of New Mathis Road and Cannon Wood Drive." According to police, "Perez left a bar before he got on the road. He later lost control of his Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, went off the road and into a ditch area. Perez then drove into a concrete driveway and flipped his vehicle." (KSAT San Antonio)
  5. On Friday, July 15, "a man robbed a Dollar General on the South Side" around 10 p.m., "in the 300 block of Moursund Boulevard, near Gillette Boulevard." According to police, "the man was wearing a mask and gloves when he walked into the store. He displayed what appeared to be a gun wrapped in a rag and pointed it at the manager. The man then demanded money from the cash register, and the manager complied. He fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of money." Although "officers searched the area," they didn't find him, so "he has not been identified," but "the investigation is ongoing." (KSAT San Antonio)
