Here are the top stories in San Antonio today:

  1. On Wednesday, May 18, San Antonio cyclists honored fallen riders by participating in a "Ride of Silence, a global cycling protest that honors those killed on the road." The event "occurs every year on the third Wednesday during National Bike Month in May." Local cyclist Jeff Moore has organized it "for the past seven years...to call attention to the city's cycling problem." He said, "I think we're in a time where it seems like the most dangerous time to cycle. I see more people running red lights, and that's extremely dangerous to cyclists." (mySA)
  2. The weekend is finally here, and to celebrate, there are several fun happenings taking place in town! "Experience the many sights, sounds, and live attractions the Alamo City has to offer! Celebrate the 40th Tejano Conjunto Festival! See artists live in concert!" For a detailed list of "the top 5 things to do in San Antonio this weekend" visit: (culturemap.com)
  3. Bentley's on Broadway, located downtown at 8123 Broadway, Suite B, will no longer accept guests under 25. "The move comes after nearby drinking establishment Horizons & More opened its doors in March with a 30-and-over admission policy." Although the drinking age in the U.S. is 21, "under Texas law, bar owners can refuse service to any patron," as long as it's not "based on race, color, religion or national origin." Since "age doesn't fall under those protected classes," the venue was able to make that decision, but "offered no explanation for the bar's new policy." (San Antonio Current)
  4. UTSA students will have an "opportunity to gain real-world, paid experience in the workforce" through the new Harvey E. Najim Center for Innovation and Career Advancement program. By "working directly with various San Antonio organizations," they will learn "transferable skills" and obtain "hands-on experience that will make them more competitive candidates for the job market." Erica Clark, Associate Director of Innovation and Career Advancement for the center, said, "Our program is unique because this is not a simulated project experience. The organizations we collaborate with are actually implementing some of the solutions that our students develop during the program." (UTSA)
  5. Any Baby Can nonprofit is helping parents during the baby formula crisis. Elyse Bernal, CEO/President of Any Baby Can, said, "Our call logs tripled this month in terms of needs in getting access to formulas you cannot find on the shelves right now." In partnership with "a durable medical goods company" and with the help of dieticians, the nonprofit finds "safe, "alternative formula manufacturers" and matches them up "with babies who need specialized formulas." The formulas are then screened for safety before Any Baby Can starts the transition process. For more information, call Any Baby Can at 210-227-0170, visit them online, or call the San Antonio Food Bank at 210-431-8326. (KSAT San Antonio)
