Here are the top stories in San Antonio today:

  1. Recently, the San Antonio City Council approved contracts "for community partners to implement the $200 million SA: Ready to Work program" to place individuals into certification or degree programs and "into 'high-quality,' in-demand jobs." Michael Ramsay, Director of the initiative, said, "we believe that that alignment between the skills that those companies are looking for, the talent base that we have here in San Antonio could be a game-changer economically for our community." 2. In 1990, gorillas at the San Antonio Zoo were "moved back to the Smithsonian's National Zoo" but now, after 30 years, the gorillas are returning to the San Antonio Zoo once again! The animals will be housed in "a two-acre gorilla habitat known as Congo Falls," which will be "one of the largest gorilla habitats in the U.S." and "will feature unique spaces, vistas and exploration opportunities for the guests and gorillas." The zoo is currently raising funds for the project, which will cost approximately $15 million. For more details and to learn about the history of the San Antonio Zoo, please visit: (mySA)
  3. Anna Afanasieva, a native of Ukraine, "has been keeping a close eye on the events unfolding in her homeland." She said, "Everybody's there. All my friends and my family are there...It's really hard for me to watch everything from the distance without being able to affect it in any way." To alleviate those feelings of helplessness and to help in some way, Afanasieva, who is also the co-owner of San Antonio's Laika Cheesecake and Espresso, "decided to donate all of Saturday's proceeds from the Alamo Heights business to support the people of Ukraine." The event was advertised on social media and was a huge success! She said, "I'm very, very grateful for all the support that we received...I expected that people would come and support but not in these quantities, honestly."
