🌱 SAISD Approves Raises + Wayback Burgers #3 + Local War Vet Honored

Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:

  1. On Saturday, May 21, San Antonians will be able to get rid of household hazardous waste items from 8 a.m.-Noon at a Solid Waste Management Department event taking place at 2755 Rigsby Road. To participate in the free event, they will need to show "a valid picture ID and a copy of their most recent CPS Energy bill." Items that can be dropped include "paint, oil, chemicals, pesticides and batteries," however, "household garbage, ammunition, fireworks and medical waste" will not be accepted.   2. If you have a medical emergency, CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System's "CHRISTUS On Demand Care" can now help you without the need for you to leave home. The new South Texas service "is a virtual way for you to see a health care provider." However, if a doctor considers you need to be seen, service reps can help set up an appointment or ER visit, "facilitate referrals and provide other helpful instructions."   3. On Monday, May 16, "San Antonio ISD approved a bigger pay raise for full-time teachers and staff." The new raise percentages are 3% for teachers and support staff; 2% for principals, assistant principals and associate principals; and 1% for "other department staff whose salaries are over $100,000." Councilwoman Teri Castillo said, "Recognizing that as an elected official of our city's most economically poor city council district, we must work collectively to ensure that we uplift our communities...That starts with investing in our schools and investing in our teachers because that's an investment in our students."   4. The 3rd San Antonio "Wayback Burgers" location will celebrate its grand opening on Sunday, May 21, at 11707 Bandera Road. During the event, "classic burgers will be available for $3.99," and "there will also be a DJ, free face-painting, and balloon art." Guests will also have "a chance to win a 55-inch Samsung Smart TV, free burgers for a year, and gift cards."   5. Local war veteran Craig Andrade was honored on Tuesday, May 17, during a San Antonio Missions game held at Wolff Stadium, located at 5757 W US Highway 90. The military hero "who lost both of his legs in an explosion while fighting in Iraq" was gifted with "a new GMC truck" to thank him for his service. The presentation was hosted by Cavender Auto Group, in partnership with the Disabled Veterans National Foundation.
