Miguel Moreno succumbs to injuries Friday after he and partner were shot by a suspect as they exited their patrol vehicle.

SAN ANTONIO, TX — One of the two officers shot by a suspect on Thursday has died, San Antonio police confirmed.

Miguel I. Moreno had been in grave condition at the hospital after being shot in the head by a suspect. His partner, who was wearing body armor, was shot in the chest but is expected to survive. According to police, Moreno died shortly after 11 a.m. on Friday morning.

The shooting occurred Thursday afternoon when the officers had interaction with two individuals. As soon as the officers exited their patrol car, the police chief said, the suspect opened fire. Both officers were able to return fire, killing the suspect. A second suspect was apprehended.

Moreno's partner has since been identified as Julio Cavazos. He was shot in the stomach during the violent encounter, but is expected to recover.

Police identified the suspect as Andrew C. Bice, 34. He died just after 5 p.m. Thursday at University Hospital after shooting himself, police said. Initial reports indicated the suspect died after police returned fire, but now officials said he shot himself after opening fire on the police officers.

This is the second police killing since November in San Antonio. Veteran officer Benjamin Marconi, 50, was shot dead by a suspect as he sat in his car outside police headquarters last year.
