Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:

  1. Last week, "The San Antonio Water System's rate advisory committee submitted new rates to the board of trustees...that could lead to a significant decrease in water bills." The new rates would benefit "about 83% of customers," who could see "about a 20% cut in their water bills, depending on their water usage." Also, "customers enrolled in the affordability program will pay at least 50% less than those not in the program." In these next 4 months, SAWS will get feedback from customers, "until it goes to the city council" for voting in November. (mySA)
  2. The San Antonio Business Journal recently recognized "25 professional women from a wide variety of sectors," bestowing each with a "Women's Leadership Award," which "honors women in leadership positions who are agents of change in their fields and in the San Antonio community." Among the honorees was Dr. Kimberly Andrews Espy, UTSA Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, who said, "I am so grateful to be recognized among this esteemed group of professional women. Being a part of a university with high aspirations for community impact and benefit is one of the reasons I came to UTSA, and it is my honor to help lead those efforts." (UTSA)
  3. A local athletics and enrichment program for kids with disabilities is getting national attention, "thanks to a grant from Hudl and Gatorade." Kinetic Kids, founded in 2001 by "local therapists Tracey Fontenot and Kacey Wernli," is one of three programs nationwide that "will receive three years of access to Hudl's video software and solutions, in addition to a video documentary series focused on highlighting the selfless individuals responsible for the program's growth." Kinetic Kids is "funded by donations and corporate sponsors" and currently serves "about 4,000 children with disabilities annually in the greater San Antonio area." 4. From August 13-17, approximately 100 local eateries and bars will be participating in "Restaurants Weeks" event "organized by local nonprofit Culinaria." The two-week event will feature "a variety of prix-fixe multi-course meals at participating local restaurants," with menu prices ranging from "$20 and $30 for lunch, and $35, $45, and $55." Also, "to-go options" will be offered "at select eateries." Some of the proceeds from the event will go towards "promoting the Alamo City as a premier food and wine destination." (culturemap.com)
  5. A year ago, "San Antonio comedian and former TV personality Cleto Rodriguez was released from the hospital after his grueling fight with COVID-19." He and his family were "unvaccinated at the time" he became ill, and "unfortunately his 77-year-old father-in-law Roger died." Although Rodriguez was fortunate to have survived, "his lungs were severely damaged and are taking a little longer to heal," and "he still can't walk fast or run just yet" and "has brain fog where he can't remember some things." During his illness, Rodriguez received may "get-well messages and prayers" from the San Antonio community, and "April Ancira, vice president of Ancira Auto Group, launched a GoFundMe, which surpassed its goal of $50,000." Rodriguez said, "I'm so grateful to everyone that supported me through this difficult time financially, and spiritually. It meant so much to my family and myself! Your thoughts and prayers are what got me through!" For more on his story and experience, please visit: (mySA)
