🌱 School Supply Drive For Teachers + New Luxury Hotel Coming To SA

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in San Antonio.

Hello, everybody! I'm back in your inbox this morning with everything you need to know about what's happening in town today. Follow along for the latest...

First, today's weather:

Warm; a stray p.m. t-storm. High: 103 Low: 77.

📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in San Antonio who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.

I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our San Antonio Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.

Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:

  1. "A drive-thru school supply drive... to support teachers starting the school year" will be held on Tuesday, July 26 from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. at The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, located at 100 Auditorium Circle. Tobin Center officials are asking for donations of school supplies "such as pencils, dry erase markers, crayons, colored pencils, markers, paper, Clorox wipes, and Kleenex." They can be dropped off at the Tobin Center, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Lauren Keck, marketing manager for the Tobin Center, said, "Teachers are the foundation of our communities, and we want to thank them for dedicating their days to building a brighter future for the next generation." (KSAT San Antonio)
  2. Earlier this week, two boys ages 4 and 9 "were grazed by bullets as they were waiting for a snack at a west side business on South Laredo Street." One of the boys "was shot in the leg," while the other one was shot "in the foot." Both of them were taken to the hospital and fortunately, are "expected to make a full recovery." No other details were released, but police
spoke with witnesses and looked "at surveillance video from the area" to hopefully "track down the shooter" soon. (550 KTSA)
  3. On Saturday, July 30, Mr. and Mrs. G's Home Cooking at 2222 S. WW White Road will be closing down "after more than three decades" of serving San Antonio. The decision to close was due to "the impact of COVID-19 and other factors." The restaurant was opened in 1991 by husband-and-wife team, William and Addie Garner. Sadly, Addie "died in 2017" and William passed away last year after a long illness. After announcing the closure on Tuesday, July 12, restaurant representatives "thanked the community for its support and business over the past 32 years." (San Antonio Current)
  4. Recently local "actor, public relations expert, and emcee Chuck Cureau" posted on social media, "So… this happened tonight! So much fun being a part of @themaskedsingertour tonight. Had so much fun with @natashabedingfield, the cast, the @tobincentersa, my friends and family, and my beloved city. My heart is full right now." During "The Masked Singer National Tour" stop in San Antonio on Tuesday, July 12, "Cureau sang, rapped, and danced to the song 'It's Tricky' by Run DMC" during his "surprise celebrity guest" performance. (mysanantonio.com)
  5. At the end of 2024, Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants will open a "luxury, boutique hotel" in San Antonio's La Villita and Hemisfair area downtown. The new hotel will feature "347 rooms, a rooftop pool and lounge, 10,000-square-feet of event space and a fitness center." According to a news release, "the development will include both new construction and the renovation of two existing historic buildings" which will include "a high-end restaurant, lively lobby bar and several one-of-a-kind hotel suites." • "We're less than a week away from the anniversary of 'The Great (Little) Train Robbery' at the San Antonio Zoo! Each Zoo Train ride on Monday, July 18, will host a guided audio tour of the event that took place 52 years ago on July 18, 1970, when passengers aboard the Brackenridge Eagle winded through the park and into history when the miniature train was looted by two masked robbers. Tickets can be purchased on the day of the event at our Train Depot for just $10 and includes a complimentary box of popcorn!" (San Antonio Zoo via Instagram)
