Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:
- The search continues for missing 3-year-old Lina Khil, who disappeared on Monday, Dec. 20 from Villa Del Cabo apartments, located at the 9400 block of Fredericksburg Road. On Sunday, Jan. 2, The Eagles Flight Advocacy & Outreach organization and people in the Afghan community "joined forces to search for Lina in the greenbelt area behind St. George Maronite Catholic Church on Babcock Road," however, her whereabouts are still unknown. The Islamic Center of San Antonio and Crime Stoppers are offering a $150,000 reward for information "that leads to the arrest of a suspect involved" in Lina's disappearance. Anyone with information is asked to call SAPD's missing person unit at 210-207-7660. (KSAT San Antonio)
- Now that the holidays are over, it's time to start thinking of what to do with that dead Christmas tree. Well, why not donate it to Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation (WRR)? They are "accepting donations of untreated, natural Christmas trees to use as enrichment for the animals in their care." Trees can be dropped off from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. at WRR at 1354 Basse Road or at WRR's sanctuary located at 355 Old Blanco Road in Kendalia. - As temperatures dropped in San Antonio, local organizations and nonprofits worked hard on Sunday, Jan. 2, to get people off the streets and into shelter before the freeze. Valerie Salas, director of Homeless Services for Christian Assistance Ministries (CAM), said, "Not one person is left out in this cold that wants to get out of the freezing weather. As cold as it's going to get (Sunday night) it's going to be painful and threatening to their life." About 80 homeless people were transported to shelters, but unfortunately the majority chose to stay where they were. Those who remained on the streets were given hand warmers, blankets and coats to try and stay warm. The work was made easier thanks to a new app called The Weather Shelter Coalition app, which "was made to ease some of the difficulties the volunteers had faced in last year's winter storm." Alex Fleming, pastor of the Life Restored Church, met with designers to make the app a reality. For more details, please visit: (ksat.com)
- In an effort to help "conserve the endangered Puerto Rican toad population, the San Antonio Zoo recently released Puerto Rican Crested Toad Tadpoles into their native habitat." The species, which was thought to be extinct, was discovered "in the Guanica National Forest in the southern portion of the main island." Tim Morrow, Zoo president and CEO, said "Saving Puerto Rican Crested Toads is one of almost 20 research and conservation programs San Antonio Zoo has partnered with to create a global community that loves, engages with, acts for, and protects animals and the places where they live." He added, "We're honored to be a part of this initiative. It's a great testament to this community's dedication to wildlife protection as well as the depth of our abilities."
