Here are the top stories today in San Antonio:

  1. Last year, the Ronald McDonald House Charities' Sid Katz House at 4803 Sid Katz was damaged due to winter storms. This year, Lowe's Hometowns and Bobby Berk, designer and star of a "season of 'Queer Eye' that took place in Austin," are renovating it. Lowe's will provide $100,000 to "renovate and repair three outdoor spaces and exterior entrance to the home," and Berk will lead the "concept and design" of the project, to "be completed by the end of 2022." For more project details, please visit: (mySA)
  2. Blue Star Contemporary's Southtown gallery, located at 116 Blue Star, currently has two exhibits that "offer diverse perspectives on the lives of veterans and the lasting memories of war." They're titled the "Veterans Book Project" and "Travel Distance," and are on display until Sunday, Oct. 9. Exhibitions manager Jacqueline Saragoza McGilvray said, "the two exhibits aim to shed light on the undiscussed realities of war and the American military while also challenging dominant narratives about the experiences of those in the service." She added, "We wanted to show more diversity in people's understanding of what different military experiences are." For more information visit: (San Antonio Magazine)
  3. This year's Balcones Heights Jazz Festival at Wonderland of the Americas, located at 4522 Fredericksburg Road, Ste. 124, "will kick off" with a concert on Friday, July 15, " followed by a second one on Friday, July 29." Lorenzo Nastasi, director of economic development and public affairs at City of Balcones Heights, said, "We are excited to feature live jazz concerts again this summer with two back-to-back July performances presenting a stellar line up of dynamic national and local artists at the beautiful, sparkling Wonderland Amphitheater." For more details on the concerts and the performers, please visit: (Broadway World)
  4. Jefferson Bodega, which features "rare anime-themed treats and unusual drinks," is temporarily closed as "one of the owners, Luke Horgan, announced that he has been diagnosed with a heart disease." The store, located at 1005 Donaldson Ave., is most popular for its "novelty snacks featuring popular anime characters." During the venue's closure, Horgan and his wife, Lisa, are "exploring what treatment steps to take next with a cardiac surgeon." Lisa Horgan said, "He's a fighter. And so, we'll figure out the next steps and face this head-on with love and patience." For more on this story visit: (mySA)

Are you a San Antonio resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can't afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here's why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2 percent when inflation is >3 percent
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164 percent (1995-2021)

To learn more, visit Masterworks.io, where San Antonio Daily readers can skip the waitlist.
