🌱 Vigil Held In Honor Of Child Abuse Victims + 'Selena' Movie Returns

  1. This month is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and to honor young victims of child abuse, the Guardians of the Children San Antonio - "a nonprofit organization made up of bikers" - held a candlelight vigil at a Milan Park on Saturday, April 2. During the event, the "organizers read through the names of the thirteen Bexar County children lost to abuse in 2021 and other across the state" and "they also shared ways to prevent abuse from happening." Tex Mire, president of the organization, said, "We believe that every child's [name] that we read tonight was preventable. Their death could've been prevented and that someone could've done something to save them."   2. After "a two-year pause" due to COVID-19, Fiesta San Antonio is back at the Hemisfair, located at 434 S. Alamo St. The event kicked off on Thursday, March 31 and will continue until Sunday, April 10. Avery Walker, Fiesta 2022 Teen Queen, said, "I think it's definitely gotten bigger...People are a lot more excited this year. … After everything being shut down, this is the first big Fiesta again and it's a lot of fun to see all the cultures come together once again. Ernest Hernandez, "who was born on the first day of Fiesta in 1977," attended "Thursday's kickoff while remembering loved ones who were only with him in spirit." The way he did this was by wearing a 12-pound sombrero" decorated with butterflies representing "his many friends who have died since the pandemic," as well as "his sister who recently died of breast cancer."   3. Starting Monday, April 7, the movie "Selena" regarding the life of "Texas singer Selena Quintanilla" who died on March 31, 1995, returns to San Antonio theaters. "The film, which was primarily shot in San Antonio, was inducted into the National Film Registry in 2021" and will be shown at Cinemark McCreless Market and Regal Huebner Oaks & RPX. Actress Jennifer Lopez, who played the part of Selena in the movie, said on Twitter, "This movie means so much to me. Selena and her family mean so much to me, and I was so lucky to be chosen to play her."
