Here are the top stories in San Antonio today:

  1. During an interview on Leading SA that took place on Sunday, July 24, Marc Anderson —president and CEO of Visit San Antonio — discussed "what the last two years have looked like in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and what comes next." He said, "In 2019, we saw from tourism and travel in San Antonio $17.4 billion in economic impact for our community. Close to $500 million of that was in tax revenue. That goes directly to our public schools in San Antonio, our streets and sanitation, our public safety, like the police department and the fire department. So, our team was really laser-focused on making a difference and leading our city back to pre-pandemic numbers." For more on this interview, please visit: (KSAT San Antonio)
  2. After 102 years, the local Charles A. James Bicycle Shop located at 319 N. Main Avenue is now being "threatened by San Antonio's ever-changing downtown." Although the future of the shop is very uncertain, currently you can visit it from Monday-Friday, between 8:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m., and Saturday from 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. In this article, owner Hank Estrada discusses the rich family history of "San Antonio's oldest bike shop: (mySA)
  3. Recently 10 U.S. cities, including San Antonio, received "the 2022 All-America City Award" from the "National Civic League (NLC) and the Campaign for Grade-Level Reading." All 10 cities "improved prospects for early school success and equitable learning recovery for their most vulnerable children and families using housing as a platform." The awards were given based on their "commitment to cross-sector collaboration; meaningful partnerships with public housing agencies and affordable-housing organizations; data-based solutions; and equity, including racial equity." 4. Last week, 20-year-old Pablo Medellin was arrested for posting on Instagram "explicit threats of shooting up" San Antonio College (SAC), along with pictures of himself "with various weapons, including an assault rifle, with SAC campus visible in the background." Yesterday, July 24, the man was "to be released from jail...after posting bail" with a bond "set at $100,000" and the condition that he would "be on house arrest with a no-contact order." (KENS5.com)
  5. On Monday, July 18, "14-year-old Hope Ogle" disappeared "and her family hasn't been able to reach her." According to her mother, Cara, before she disappeared, she "had gotten into trouble...and was going to be grounded." She said that on "the morning of Hope's disappearance, she left a note for her family telling them she would be going away and not to worry. However, by 8 p.m., Hope still hadn't returned." That's when her mother decided to call the police. Hope "has green eyes and brown, shoulder-length hair, with a nose piercing and scars on her forearms. She also has a medical condition." Anyone with information on the missing teen is asked to please call the police at 210-207-7660. (KENS5.com)

From my notebook:

  • "San Antonio Zoo's 'La Llorona' has been moved to the F.C. Hixon Birdhouse for a cooling period, which is part of the natural life cycle of the plant. A seasonal change allows the plant to shut down into an inactive state, from which the plant will eventually begin growth once again. " (San Antonio Zoo via Instagram)
  • "The pride of the South Side was on full display at Burbank High School's 'Last Look' event this past weekend! It was a day for celebrating, for reliving and retelling Burbank stories from the past, and even a wedding. But most of all, generations of Burbank alumni delivered their mantra in unison: "Once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog!" The learning continues for the Burbank HS family when the new campus opens it doors for students next month!" (San Antonio ISD via Facebook)
  • "Do you have an 'old clunker' sitting around? Is your old, immovable car taking up space in your driveway? With a gift of your used or junky vehicle, individuals throughout the community can drive support for San Antonio Pets Alive! In fact, a single vehicle donation can make a substantial impact in providing the funds we need to continue to save dogs and cats from euthanasia! We consider all types of vehicle donations and make it easy to give with free and convenient pick-up. As a donation, your car, truck, RV, etc. can hold more value than just a low trade-in deal and do more than sit and collect dust! We'll take cars that don't move or operate anymore! No car is too old or decrepit! To donate, simply call 855-500-7433 (RIDE) or submit an online donation form at https://www.careasy.org/nonprofit/San-Antonio-Pets-Alive."
