• Willis High School student detained after gun discovered inside backpack (click2houston.com) — A student at Willis High School was detained Wednesday morning after an assistant principal found a gun in the student's backpack, which was immediately confiscated. Authorities and Willis ISD say the campus remained secure and there was no active threat, but they're urging families to double-check backpacks for prohibited items before students head to school. 
• Bette Jane Trail (bluebonnetnews.com) — Family and friends are remembering Bette Jane Trail, a longtime nurse, Christian author, and devoted ministry partner whose life touched communities from New York to Texas, including relatives now living in Willis. Services will be held Sept. 3 in Cleveland, with burial at Security Cemetery, and loved ones are invited to honor her legacy of faith and service.
• Texas Longhorns Football trio named to Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year watch list (on3.com) — A standout Texas Longhorns freshman wide receiver, Jermaine Bishop Jr., hails from Willis and is one of three UT players named to the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year watch list. His record-setting high school playoff performance helped lead Willis to a deep postseason run, giving local fans extra reason to follow the Longhorns this fall.
