Hot Wells Shooting Range Slowly Reopens After Tragic Shooting

Hot Wells Shooting Range closed after 36-year old Joshua Cummings was accidentally shot in the range parking lot on Dec. 12

CYPRESS, TX — Hot Wells Shooting Range is slowly getting back to business three weeks after a 36-year old man was accidentally shot and killed in the parking lot.

The range, a local favorite in the Cypress community, was marred by tragedy when 36-year old Joshua Cummings was accidentally shot and killed in the parking lot, when an employee accidentally fired a hunting rifle that was being serviced inside one of the buildings at the range.

Cummings, who was a husband and father of triplets, was taken by LifeFlight to Memorial Hermann Hospital but died of his injuries a short time later.

In the wake of the Dec. 12 tragedy, friends and family of the Cummings family set up a YouCaring page to raise funds to cover funeral and living expenses, which has raised just over $85,000 so far.

There were no charges filed in the shooting, but the case is still under investigation, and as that progressed Hot Wells Shooting Range was closed and only began to slowly reopen just a few days before Christmas.

Hot Wells Shooting Range has been in operation since 1973, and is one of four outdoor shooting ranges in the Houston area.

In a Facebook post on Dec. 22, the range announced that the range would reopen the office for training only on Dec. 26.

“We are approaching this tragedy with the utmost seriousness, and are committed to reopening this facility to once again serve the community we love. We do ask for your continued prayers for everyone affected,” Hot Wells Shooting Range Officials announced.

Hot Wells plans to reopen its rifle and pistol range on Jan. 2.
