Amazon, Delta, UPS Among Sites Down In Brief, Widespread Outage

The outage, which also affected McDonald's and Airbnb, is reportedly linked to a content distribution network.

ACROSS AMERICA — A widespread internet outage caused dozens of popular websites to go down Thursday, affecting companies including Amazon, Airbnb, The Home Depot, Southwest Airlines, McDonald's and more.

The outages were linked to content distribution network Akamai, CNBC reported.

By about 12:50 p.m. ET, Akamai said it had resolved the issue and the service on most sites appeared to be back to normal.

"A software configuration update triggered a bug in the DNS system, the system that directs browsers to websites," Akamai wrote on Twitter. "This caused a disruption, impacting availability of some customer websites."

The company, which helps move data around the internet, said it was investigating the issue.

Several financial institutions were also reporting outages. They include U.S. Bank, Charles Schwab, Fidelity Investments, Capital One, Chase Bank and more.
