WASHINGTON, DC — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is expected to amend the emergency use authorizations for the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines within the next 48 hours, allowing immunocompromised people to receive a third dose.

The move would mark the first authorization of a third dose of the vaccine, according to a report by NBC News. It would also come after a panel of federal health advisers called for immunocompromised people to receive boosters because they may not be able to mount an effective immune response against the virus after two shots.

An estimated 2.7 percent of adults in the United States are immunocompromised, according to the CDC.
