ACROSS AMERICA — Consumers are about to feel the squeeze at grocery stores and restaurants alike as the price of tomato-based products climb amid extreme weather in the western United States.

The ongoing drought in California, which grows 90 percent of canned tomatoes in America and a third globally, is affecting what’s called water-hungry processing tomatoes, according to a report by The Washington Post. The result: the prices of products dependent on these tomatoes are likely to surge, if they haven’t already.

Some examples of items that could increase in price: pizza sauce, marinara, tomato paste, stewed tomatoes and ketchup.
