Arts Society of Kingston

Arts Society of Kingston presents Walter Fancourt: Walter Relieves, a twenty-year survey of the self-taught artist’s distinctive wooden sculptures and wall reliefs—works created with wit, depth, and visual poetry. Drawing inspiration from ancient history, Indigenous and vernacular art, cartoons, and the world around him, Fancourt transforms carved and painted wood into vibrant, three-dimensional compositions. His work is characterized by unexpected juxtapositions, playful forms, vivid color, and primal, almost dreamlike imagery. Fancourt’s sculptures invite viewers to look closely. Beneath their whimsical and sometimes fantastical subjects is a thoughtful exploration of form, perspective, and the unexpected connections between disparate ideas. The result is a singular visual universe that is simultaneously humorous, provocative, and contemplative. A self-taught artist, Fancourt began by carving wood and coloring his creations with magic markers before moving into acrylic paint and increasingly complex sculptural constructions. Over two decades, he has developed a highly personal artistic language that he describes as “Lyrical Art.”

Arts Society of Kingston presents Gurmi Lama: Rivers Meeting, This solo exhibition features a curated selection of Gurmi’s past and recent works, created using gouache, gold, acrylic, and oil.
Bridging the traditional and the contemporary, the East and the West, and the spiritual and the material, Gurmi’s art creates a powerful dialogue between past and present. By thoughtfully reinterpreting traditional Thanka painting influences and techniques to explore contemporary themes, his work honors ancient heritage while speaking directly to the modern world. His pieces are held in institutional and private collections across Europe, North and South America, Australia, and Asia. Born in Solukhumbu, Nepal, Gurmi Lama was raised by his grandmother and began his artistic training as a teenager, studying thangka painting with his father. By the time he completed his BA at Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu, Lama had established himself as a successful thangka painter. He later studied contemporary art with renowned Nepalese painter and writer Manuj Babu Mishra, expanding his practice while remaining grounded in his traditional training. Lama’s artistic journey bridges traditional and contemporary approaches to image-making. He has taught thangka painting to both local and international students in his Kathmandu studio and served for nine years as a thangka painting instructor for Naropa University’s Abroad Program in Nepal. His work has been collected internationally, with paintings held in private collections throughout Europe, North and South America, Australia, and Asia. For Lama, artistic style and medium are tools for communicating the deeper message of the artist. His portraits seek to capture the likeness of his subjects while deliberately moving away from strict realism, allowing memory, personality, and lived experience to emerge. His other works explore his perceptions of an ever-changing world, drawing from humor, trauma, dreams, delusion, happiness, and the frustrations of everyday life. Rather than adhering to a particular artistic movement or ideology, Lama embraces an intuitive and deeply personal approach to making art. Perception reflects this ongoing negotiation between opposing forces—tradition and contemporary life, humor and trauma, reality and imagination, beauty and uncertainty. The exhibition offers a view into an artist whose practice is rooted in both cultural inheritance and personal experience, using painting and sculpture to explore how we make sense of the world—and how our perceptions continually shape it.

The Arts Society of Kingston presents Color Inferno, a dynamic juried exhibition celebrating the power of bold color, radiant energy, and visual intensity. Bringing together the work of 27 artists, Color Inferno explores color at its most expressive—from blazing sunsets and molten landscapes to vibrant abstractions and emotionally charged palettes. The exhibition invites viewers to experience color not simply as a visual element, but as a force capable of evoking passion, transformation, joy, chaos, warmth, and renewal. Artists consider the expressive possibilities of hue, saturation, light, and contrast. Some works burn with fiery reds, oranges, and yellows, while others ignite through unexpected combinations, luminous contrasts, and bold explorations of color. Featured artists are:
Mary Lynne Bonforte, Nancy Donskoj, Beth Feinstein, PJ Flanagan, Stacie Flint, Patti Gibbons, Terry Haas, Tom Hackett, David Held, Laura Helfant, David Holt, Locke Johnston, Deirdre Laughton, Jennifer Leighton, Joel Mandelbaum, Lynn Margileth, Connie Noelle, Carol Pepper-Cooper, Tracy Phillips, Pete Preston, Karen Schaffel, Herb Silander, Faye Storms, Judy Stanger, Mark Thibodeau, Andrew Tully, and Aileen Walsh. The exhibition is juried by Stephen Olivier, ASK Gallery Chair.

Getting interviews but not getting offers?
Confidence That Sells is a two-session, hands-on job interview preparation workshop for professionals who already get interviews with hiring managers but struggle to turn them into callbacks and offers.
Instead of practicing answers to common interview questions, participants will identify everything they actually do, who depends on their work, the problems they solve, and how they get work done. Then they'll turn that experience into clear, specific stories they can use in interviews.
Monday & Tuesday, October 5–6 9:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. both days The Greenhouse at Good Work Institute 65 St. James Street, Kingston
The workshop is live and interactive, with individual work, group discussion, small groups, and pairs. A participant workbook is included. Maximum 30 participants.
