When the celebrations of July 4, 1776, faded, New Jerseyans confronted a sobering reality: the prospect of all-out war. On Wednesday, November 4, at 7:30 PM, join us via Zoom as Dr. Susan Craig explores in this Heritage Lecture how the philosophical and legal ideals behind the Declaration of Independence collided with the fear and aggression of the war's opening months.
Those high-minded principles went on to shape the governing structures of the newly independent states, particularly in the mid-Atlantic region, even as the conflict spread from New York into New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Along the way, a new generation of Americans grappled with mounting economic pressure and growing danger.
