Whether you’re an emerging or experienced choreographer, the M-NCPPC Arts and Cultural Heritage Division is seeking talented choreographers to audition for a chance to showcase choreography at the 43rd Annual Choreographers’ Showcase at the Publick Playhouse on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2026, at 7 pm. To audition, choreographers can opt to submit an audition video or schedule an in-person audition for an adjudication panel. In-person auditions are by appointment only—reserve your spot today!

This October, Washington, D.C.’s Dissonance Dance Theatre&nbsp;(DDT) celebrates its 20th anniversary season at&nbsp;the Publick Playhouse with&nbsp;Through the Dark, the Light Beckons, a powerful evening of movement and meaning&nbsp;rooted in the African American experience.&nbsp;Featuring&nbsp;beloved company repertoire and world premieres by acclaimed choreographer Shawn Short, the program unfolds in three chapters—the pulse and grit of the city’s streets; the fragments of memory that shape us; and the spirit, soul, and sophistication of everyday people.
The evening moves to a soundtrack as wide-ranging as its stories: the grooves of Earth, Wind &amp; Fire; the velvet soul of Nancy Wilson and October London; the Afro-pop voice of Angélique Kidjo,&nbsp;cellist Abel Selaoco’s percussive fire; and the cinematic scores of Hans Zimmer and Max Richter. As we prepare for Thanksgiving, Stories of Thanks&nbsp;shares the tales&nbsp;of many cultures explaining the original “whys” of the world, as science does now. The imagery and values in the stories from Dovie’s Native ancestry pair the “whys” of science with the very contemporary “hows” of living in balance on our shared Earth.&nbsp;This enriching experience supports learning through the arts while inspiring students to listen deeply, celebrate heritage, and appreciate the power of stories passed down through generations.&nbsp;There is a 10 AM show and 11:15 AM show.
