"Four classical musicians performing with the energy of young rock stars...making classical music accessible but also celebrating why it was good in the first place" (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette). Brooklyn Rider has sculpted a singular space in the world of string quartets with a gripping performance style and unquenchable appetite for musical adventure.Celebrating twenty years of shared musical exploration, Brooklyn Rider originated in a living room, four friends in search of an outlet for their curiosities. Inspired by the probing spirit of Germany's pre-WW1 artistic collective Der Blaue Reiter, they recognized parallels with their creative community in Brooklyn and began to build projects. In the two decades since, the quartet has carved a singular space in the world of string quartets through thoughtful programmatic framing, deep-rooted collaborations, and innovative commissioning projects. Inspired equally by the rich repertoire of the past and the limitless canvas of new creation, Brooklyn Rider seeks to create meaningful and memorable experiences for its audiences.Program - Citizenship Notes: HAYDN: String Quartet in F Minor, Op. 20 No. 5; ANGELICA NEGRON: Our Children Speak English and Spanish; DON BYRON: String Quartet No. 3; TED HEARNE: We Are Working Tirelessly For A Ceasefire; BOB DYLAN, arr. Beginning with God Bless America, Irving Berlin's musical prayer of thanksgiving to the nation that gave him refuge as a child fleeing pogroms in Russia, Fellow Citizens explores migration and immigration narratives in the United States through the art of song. Featuring works by a wide range of composers - from Franz Schubert to Ruth Crawford Seeger - Fellow Citizens reflects on two enduring narratives in American history: one that asserts America is for Americans, and another that celebrates the country as a "Nation of Immigrants." Nicholas Phan is accompanied by Grammy Award-nominated pianist Myra Huang, who is acclaimed by the New York Times as "a colouristic tour de force."Nicholas Phan is a Grammy Award-winning lyric tenor, curator, and educator, celebrated for his expressive artistry and versatility across a repertoire spanning nearly 500 years. Described by the Boston Globe as "one of the world's most remarkable singers," he has earned international recognition for his captivating stage presence, keen intelligence, and natural musicianship. In 2010 he co-founded Art Song Chicago to promote art song and vocal chamber music, where he serves as artistic director.Program - Fellow Citizens: Songs by IRVING BERLIN, SCHUBERT, RUTH CRAWFORD SEEGER and others, including a new work by SHAWN OKPEBHOLO.$75/65/55.Presented by San Francisco Performances
