The Book Stall

The Book Stall is excited to welcome Rowan Beaird to the store on Thursday, September 10 at 6:30 pm for a discussion featuring her new book, Tenderness. From the beloved author of&nbsp;The Divorcées&nbsp;comes a novel set in the 1970s during an island wedding, where the bride, Shay, has recently left a sinister cult that might still be trailing her. Told from the interwoven perspectives of Shay’s brother William, her longtime friend Joel, and Shay herself,&nbsp;Tenderness&nbsp;is a slow-burn mystery that excavates dark family histories and romantic regrets. Ms. Beaird will be in-conversation with author Lindsay Hunter.&nbsp;
Rowan Beaird&nbsp;is the author of the novels&nbsp;Tenderness&nbsp;and&nbsp;The Divorcées. Her fiction has appeared in&nbsp;The Southern Review, Ploughshares,&nbsp;and&nbsp;Gulf Coast. She lives in Chicago with her husband and daughter.
Lindsay Hunter&nbsp;received her MFA in Writing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her first book,&nbsp;Daddy’s,&nbsp;is a collection of flash fiction. Her second collection,&nbsp;Don't Kiss Me, was named one of Amazon’s 10 Best Books of&nbsp;the&nbsp;Year: Short Stories. Her first novel,&nbsp;Ugly Girls,&nbsp;was called by&nbsp;The&nbsp;Huffington Post&nbsp;“a story that hits a note that’s been missing from&nbsp;the&nbsp;chorus of existing feminist literature.” Her latest novel,&nbsp;Eat Only When You’re Hungry,&nbsp;was a Book of the Month Club selection, a finalist for the 2017&nbsp;Chicago Review of Books&nbsp;Fiction Award, and a&nbsp;2017&nbsp;NPR Great Read. She produces and hosts the podcast I’m a Writer But, a series about writers with kids, jobs, and/or lives, and how they make it all work (or don’t). Lindsay’s fifth book, a novel titled&nbsp;Hot Springs Drive, is out now and was named one of the 12 Best Thrillers of the Year by the&nbsp;Washington Post. She lives in Chicago with her family.

Meredith Walker began her career in journalism at the groundbreaking Nickelodeon series Nick News. She later moved to Saturday Night Live, where she ran the talent department, before she and Amy Poehler cofounded Smart Girls, an online community that encourages young women to celebrate who they are and who they are becoming.&nbsp;

The Book Stall is thrilled to welcome to the store our friend Lindsay Currie&nbsp;on Tuesday, September 15 at 4:30 pm for an after-school discussion featuring her new book, The Secret Bookstore Sleuth Society. From #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Mystery of Locked Rooms comes a thrilling middle-grade cozy mystery. In this exciting series starter, four best friends are trapped in a book-themed inn during an ice storm and they must use each of their special skills, as well as a few tips from an armchair-detective grandma, to figure out who killed one of the regular customers. We'll have refreshments and some fun bookstore sleuthing of our own! Ms. Currie will be in-conversation with Wendy Parris. This event is perfect for kids ages 9 to 12.&nbsp;

The Secret Bookstore Sleuth Society: An After-School Discussion with Lindsay Currie

The Book Stall welcomes award-winning author Abby Geni to the store on Thursday, September 17 at 6:30 pm for a discussion featuring her new book, Children of the Wolf, in partnership with Off Campus Writers' Workshop and Kelly Q Anderson. A woman notices a pattern of men disappearing in her small town, reawakening memories of her childhood raised by a father obsessed with his violent Viking heritage. Amanda Peters, author of The Berry Pickers, says, “Abby Geni’s writing is evocative, the story is unique, and the ethical dilemma played out in the book will linger long after the last page. A truly great read!”
Abby Geni is a novelist and short story writer living in Evanston.&nbsp;She is the author of&nbsp;The Body Farm, longlisted for the Joyce Carol Oates Prize and the Story Prize;&nbsp;The Wildlands, a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize;&nbsp;The Lightkeepers, winner of the Barnes &amp; Noble Discover Award and the Chicago Review of Books Awards; and The Last Animal, a finalist for the Orion Book Award. Her short stories and essays have appeared in dozens of literary publications, including Best American Mystery and Suspense, The Missouri Review, Epoch, Ninth Letter, and New Stories from the Midwest. Geni is a faculty member at StoryStudio Chicago and a recipient of the Iowa Fellowship.

The Book Stall is thrilled to welcome Winnetka native and acclaimed historian, Catherine Grace Katz for a discussion of her new book, Shadow Before the Flame: The Hindenburg Disaster and the Prelude to War at the Winnetka Chapel. In this rigorously researched, ticking-clock account, Shadow Before the Flame offers a portrait of an era when illusions of peace, fueled by the hubris of invention, hovered in suspended time as the clouds of an inevitable war loomed on the horizon. Ms. Katz will be in-conversation with Book Stall resident historian Jon Grand. Doors open at 6:30, join us early for mingling before the talk at 7:00!

Catherine Grace Katz is a writer and historian from Winnetka, IL and the author of the acclaimed history, The Daughters of Yalta: The Churchills, Roosevelts, and Harrimans: A Story of Love and War. She received degrees in History from Harvard and Christ’s College, University of Cambridge, and a JD from Harvard Law School. Alongside her work as an historian, Catherine is an associate at an international law firm in Washington, D.C.

The Book Stall is thrilled to host a discussion with bestselling author Patrick Ryan to celebrate the paperback release of Buckeye, “a glorious sweep of a novel” (Ann Patchett) that weaves the intimate lives of two midwestern families across generations, from World War II to the late twentieth century. Patrick Ryan is the author of the novel Buckeye. He is also the author of the story collections The Dream Life of Astronauts (named one of the Best Books of the Year by the St. Louis Times-Dispatch, LitHub, Refinery 29, and Electric Literature, and longlisted for The Story Prize) and Send Me. His work has appeared in The Best American Short Stories, the anthology Tales of Two Cities, and elsewhere. The former associate editor of Granta, he is the editor of the literary magazine One Story and lives in New York City.

Explore the history of Renaissance architecture and art—join Lake Forest College professors Dr. Melissa Rovner and Dr. Kimiko Matsumura for this exciting new community engagement series
Art and Architecture History at the Krebs Center
Registration fee: $450 for the five-week series

Course times: Thursday evenings, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Course dates: September 10, September 17, September 24, October 1, October 8
Held at the historic Krebs Center for the Humanities, this series will explore the traditions of Renaissance form, ornament, spatial organization, material culture, and visual symbolism that shaped how buildings and objects were made, inhabited, and interpreted. Along the way, participants will apply what they have learned directly to the Krebs Center and its collection, asking how the villa itself accumulates meaning, displays taste, and shapes our encounters with history. Each session will begin with a social reception featuring food and refreshments.
Both the educational content and social receptions will offer opportunities to build community, engage with College leadership, and learn more about ongoing campus initiatives.
