The Book Stall welcomes Della Leavitt to the store for a discussion featuring her new book, Vivian's Decision. An evocative work of historical fiction, Vivian’s Decision is an all too relevant story of repeated history, female friendship, and the strength that it takes to make choices of one’s own. Ms. Leavitt will be in-conversation with author Lindsay Hunter.
Della Leavitt draws inspiration from the lives of resilient women. After careers in technology and math education, she embarked on an intensive study to write fiction within Chicago’s vibrant writing community. Della earned a historical novel fellowship from the Newberry Library and a grant from Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs &amp; Special Events (DCASE) while writing this novel. She lives in Chicago with her family.
Lindsay Hunter received her MFA in Writing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her first book, Daddy’s,&nbsp;is a collection of flash fiction. Her second collection, Don't Kiss Me, was named one of Amazon’s 10 Best Books of&nbsp;the&nbsp;Year: Short Stories. Her first novel, Ugly Girls,&nbsp;was called by The&nbsp;Huffington Post “a story that hits a note that’s been missing from&nbsp;the&nbsp;chorus of existing feminist literature.” Her latest novel, Eat Only When You’re Hungry, was a Book of the Month Club selection, a finalist for the 2017 Chicago Review of Books Fiction Award, and a&nbsp;2017&nbsp;NPR Great Read. She produces and hosts the podcast I’m a Writer But, a series about writers with kids, jobs, and/or lives, and how they make it all work (or don’t). Lindsay’s fifth book, a novel titled Hot Springs Drive, is out now and was named one of the 12 Best Thrillers of the Year by the Washington Post. She lives in Chicago with her family.

Vivian's Decision: A Discussion with Della Leavitt & Lindsay Hunter

The Book Stall is excited to welcome J.D. Amato to the store on Tuesday, April 28 at 6:30 pm for a discussion with Betsy Bird featuring his new book, The Endless Game. Best known for his work in comedy television, J.D. Amato's middle-grade graphic novel debut is an adventurous slice-of-life book about a middle school boy who gets drawn into his new town’s intense summer game of capture the flag, perfect for fans of The Cardboard Kingdom and Craig of the Creek.
J.D. Amato is a writer based in Astoria, NY. He is best known for his work as a showrunner for comedy television shows like After Midnight; Desus &amp; Mero; My Brother, My Brother and Me and The Chris Gethard Show. He is currently an executive producer on The Undercovers, hosted by Eli Manning. Beyond television and film, J.D. has been a house performer at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theater, consulted for various magicians, performed as a mime, and once hosted a podcast where every episode was twelve hours long. He grew up on the North Shore of Chicago, and outside of writing he is an amateur distance runner and loves colorful things.&nbsp;
Our conversation partner Betsy Bird is an author, librarian, reviewer of children’s literature, public speaker, and podcaster (not necessarily in that order). She is the author of numerous picture books, two books for kids ages 9–12, two books for adults about children’s books, and more. She currently resides in Evanston with her two kids, husband, and cats Izzy and Hilo (named after the graphic novel series by Judd Winick).

She will be at the store to discuss her book, Chicago Homes: A Portrait of the City's Everyday Architecture, a comprehensive, first-of-its-kind book about Chicago’s residential architecture and the stories that shaped it. This is an entertaining and precisely illustrated story of Chicago homes from the city’s earliest days through the Second World War, revealing everything about what makes a home a Chicago home.&nbsp;
Carla Bruni has spent close to twenty years preserving, studying, and writing about historic architecture across dozens of US cities and four continents. She teaches graduate students at the School of the Art Institute Chicago, where she holds a master of science degree in historic preservation. She has been a recurring guest discussing architecture and environmental issues on WGN Radio, and her work has been featured by StoryCorps Chicago, WLS, NPR, PRX, the Chicago Reader, Chicago Tonight, Chicago magazine, and various national and international publications. She also works to support the 30,000+ members of the Chicago Bungalow Association, overseeing energy efficient retrofits, creating history and home maintenance resources, and leading the charge to list thousands of vintage homes in the National Register of Historic Places. Her professional involvement in community repair and revitalization has taken her to every corner of Chicago, her native city.

It’s hard to find a director that hasn’t been influenced by John Ford, whose classics like Stagecoach (1939) and The Searchers (1956) helped define the look and feel of American cinema. Across the globe, Akira Kurosawa was creating equally important and influential works such as Rashomom (1950) and Seven Samurai (1954)—films that continue to inspire directors today.
Held at the newly renovated Glen Rowan House, this five-week course will explore the art of filmmaking through selected works by these two titans of the film medium, and discover how movies communicate emotion, ideas, and meaning through images—and why their films still matter today. The opening and closing sessions will begin with a social reception featuring food and refreshments.
Both the educational content and social receptions will offer opportunities to build community, engage with College leadership, and learn more about ongoing campus initiatives.
