📰 News we're reading

1. Moab council restricts hours residents can water outdoors (moabtimes.com) — Moab residents using city culinary water will soon be limited to outdoor irrigation between 6 p.m. and 10 a.m., as the city council adopted permanent conservation rules instead of declaring a water shortage. Councilors also reviewed flood-mitigation work, approved budget-cleanup amendments, and filled two planning commission seats, while local youth programs and a new medical interpreter certification effort continue expanding services in Grand and San Juan counties.

2. Moab-to-Arches shuttle takes shape; commissioners walk out after funding dispute (moabtimes.com) — Grand County is moving ahead with a fare-free Moab-to-Arches shuttle pilot targeted for September, approving key agreements and shifting $350,000 from transportation tax reserves to help fund the $3 million project. The decisions sparked a heated split on the commission, with three members walking out over cost, planning, and use of Fund 47, even as final Moab stops and attendant contracts are still being nailed down.

3. Moab ranch ordered to turn off drinking water system due to numerous violations (abc4.com) — Residents and visitors relying on Sorrel River Ranch’s water system should know the state has ordered the Moab-area resort to shut off its drinking water over contamination and equipment concerns. The ranch must now supply alternative potable water while regulators investigate failed chemical feed pumps, lack of a certified operator, and other serious compliance issues that officials say pose a significant public health risk.

4. Moab Cleanup On Track For 2029 Completion as Land Ownership Remains Unclear (legis1.com) — A decades-long federal cleanup of the Moab uranium mill site is on track to finish in 2029, after moving more than 16 million tons of radioactive waste away from the Colorado River. What happens next is still undecided, but Grand County and Moab leaders are pushing to jointly own the land and potentially turn the river-adjacent property into a new outdoor recreation area.

5. Failure as a motivator: Gearing up for an ultramarathon ‣ Ocean City Sentinel (ocnjsentinel.com) — Moab’s famed 240-mile ultramarathon is the next huge test for Miami-based runner Maddie Brady, who plans to race here in October 2026 and train on local trails. Her journey from addiction recovery to extreme endurance events, including a recent collapse during a 100-miler, fuels a campaign to spotlight an Ocean City man’s need for a kidney transplant.
