📰 News we're reading

1. Moab utility customers to be auto-enrolled in clean energy program (moabtimes.com) — Most Moab Rocky Mountain Power customers will be automatically enrolled in Utah’s Community Clean Energy Program starting in 2027, adding about $4 to monthly residential bills unless they opt out. Low-income Moab residents may qualify to pay nothing, and customers will receive multiple notices before charges appear, as the city pursues its 100% renewable energy goals.

2. Grand County Planning Commission delays Water Element hearing to June (moabsunnews.com) — Grand County’s Planning Commission just postponed its formal hearing on the new Water Use and Preservation Element so staff can strip out water-supply and climate language and refocus it on reducing demand, especially landscaping. Commissioners and residents from Moab and Spanish Valley pressed concerns about drought, aquifers, and data centers, while staff confirmed the public hearing is now tentatively set for June 8. The draft will guide future land-use rules and water-wise requirements for new development.

3. Lizzy Jones and the Art of Running (irunfar.com) — Moab-based artist and ultrarunner Lizzie Jones is behind murals around town and artwork for events like the Moab 240 Mile and Moab Trail Running Film Festival. She also organizes the Moab Run Club, blending her creative work, trail running, and desert life into a highly visible presence in the community.

4. A Moab resident was detained by ICE. This local family is fighting for her release (moabtimes.com) — A Moab resident, Basak Arikan, is being held in ICE custody after a March traffic stop involving the Grand County Sheriff’s Office, and local friends are now shouldering about $30,000 in legal costs. Moab Indivisible and community members are fundraising and speaking out about her treatment in detention, emphasizing how the case affects local immigrants and neighbors here.
