📰 News we're reading

1. Salt Lake City's historic headquarters could soon be renamed (ksl.com) — Salt Lake City leaders are moving to officially rename the historic Salt Lake City-County Building at 451 S. State to Salt Lake City Hall, so residents stop confusing it with county offices. The council could approve the largely administrative change as soon as Sept. 15, then work with map services and city codes to update the name everywhere without major new costs or sign overhauls.

2. Ten days after Salt Lake City water main break, displaced families face uncertain future (fox13now.com) — Salt Lake City residents near Emery Street are still reeling ten days after a 20-inch city water main burst, flooding 15 homes, displacing four families, and opening a sinkhole. Cleanup crews, insurers, and city investigators are on scene, but homeowners remain unsure who will pay to rebuild or how long repairs will take. Nonprofits and disaster groups are beginning to offer materials and temporary housing options.

3. South Salt Lake restaurant becomes first Utah eatery to earn coveted Michelin star (ksl.com) — Food lovers around Salt Lake City now have a Michelin-starred option close to home, as Monte in South Salt Lake has become Utah's first restaurant to earn the coveted honor. The fine-dining spot on West Temple picked up one star in the new Michelin Guide Southwest, while several other Wasatch Front and Wasatch Back restaurants received Bib Gourmand and recommended listings. The guide's expansion spotlights Utah's growing culinary reputation.

4. New e-bike proposal aims to ban some bike models from dirt roads in Salt Lake County (ksl.com) — Salt Lake City readers who ride e-bikes on county dirt trails may soon face new restrictions, especially if they use throttle-equipped Class 2 or 3 models. A proposed Salt Lake County ordinance would limit those bikes on natural-surface trails, cap Class 1 speeds at 20 mph with a possible $150 fine, and is headed for public discussion at next week's council meeting.

5. Church of Jesus Christ releases statement on regional drought and the Great Salt Lake (deseret.com) — Salt Lake City residents are being urged by Latter-day Saint leaders to conserve water as the Great Salt Lake near the city faces critically low levels. The church details major water donations, smart irrigation upgrades, and water-wise landscaping at Temple Square and other properties, while encouraging members to support effective public conservation efforts across Utah and the broader West.
