📰 News we're reading

• Eaton trial extended, jury deliberations expected Monday (mychamplainvalley.com) — Burlington residents will need to wait until Monday for the jury to begin deliberating in the Jason Eaton trial over the shooting of three Palestinian men in the city nearly three years ago. Lengthy witness questioning forced the judge to extend the trial, and closing arguments are now set for Monday morning, with a possible verdict as early as that afternoon.

• Vermont funded lawyers for tenants facing eviction. The program is out of money. (vtdigger.org) — Vermont Legal Aid's Burlington office is losing state funding this fall for a pilot program that provided free lawyers to tenants facing eviction, after helping prevent displacement in dozens of cases. While some limited tenant support will continue, the shutdown means Burlington and other Vermont renters could soon face court without legal representation, even when their housing is on the line.

• Diesel prices reach all-time high, squeezing truckers in our region (wcax.com) — Truckers serving Burlington and the rest of Vermont are getting squeezed as diesel prices hit record highs, with statewide averages now just under the national peak. Local drivers, including those delivering for the Vermont Foodbank, say the surge is straining budgets and could soon push up the cost of everyday goods for residents across the region.
