1. NEW: Fairfax County proposes high school crossing guard funding, safety improvements (ffxnow.com) — Fairfax County is proposing more than $700,000 to restore high school crossing guards, including coverage for Annandale High School, after recent student-involved crashes raised safety concerns. The plan also suggests raised crosswalks at Annandale HS and other improvements like better lighting, beacons, and turn restrictions to protect walkers and cyclists. Supervisors will debate how to fund these changes amid a tight budget.
   

2. Deer hunting season underway in parks (annandaletoday.com) — Bowhunting season is underway in several Annandale-area parks, including Lake Accotink, Mason District Park, and others, with hunts allowed through Feb. 13, 2027. Police also plan nighttime sharpshooting at Annandale Community Park to curb an overabundant deer population linked to car collisions, tick-borne illness, and environmental damage. Parks remain open, but residents should be aware of posted hunting zones.
   

3. Detectives Investigate Fatal Motorcycle Crash in West Springfield (fcpdnews.org) — A motorcyclist died after a Friday night crash at Braddock Road and Southampton Drive, just outside Annandale, and Fairfax County police are asking anyone with information or camera footage to come forward. Detectives are still investigating speed and alcohol as possible factors and encourage residents to register security cameras to help with this and future cases.
