Volunteer To Help Elementary Students Improve Reading Skills
Assistance League Is Looking for Tutoring Volunteers for the 2022-2023 School Year
Do you want to make a difference in your community? Join Assistance League of Northern Virginia and make a significant difference, one child at a time. As a tutor, you’ll help young students improve their reading comprehension. Children with poor reading skills have diminished prospects for success in school and thus are less likely to move up the economic ladder as adults.
Assistance League currently has tutoring programs at 2 elementary schools in Fairfax County where it provides individualized reading practice and it is hoping to expand its outreach. The two programs are slightly different, based on the requests of the school administrators, but both involve a weekly time commitment. At one school, tutors provide individualized reading practice with first graders who need to improve their reading, comprehension, and vocabulary skills. At the second school, members provide read-aloud practice for first, second, and third graders. The kids are very appreciative and relish having the individual attention when they practice. Plus, they are so adorable.
To help with this important effort, you must first join Assistance League, and also complete a background check by Fairfax County. The nonprofit needs tutors and also substitutes to serve as needed.
