ARLINGTON, VA — Passengers flying through Reagan National Airport this summer are being advised to monitor their flights closely as airspace closures tied to America 250 celebrations in Washington, D.C., are expected to affect schedules.
Downtown D.C. celebrations will temporarily close runways at Reagan National Airport during events that include flyovers, fireworks, parachute jumps and other aerial displays.
Some airline flight schedules have already been adjusted to avoid pre-planned airspace closure times and reduce impacts on travelers, airport officials said. In other cases, flights at Reagan National may be delayed by temporary holds coordinated through air traffic control. Weather could also affect flights during the celebration period.
Events expected to periodically affect Reagan National flights include:
Airport officials said many of the airspace closures are expected to have limited duration and impact. Passengers should double-check flight times and consult their airline for specific scheduling information.
During the airspace restrictions, passengers at Reagan National will still have access to terminal concessions and parking.
The most significant impacts are expected July 3 and July 4, when aerial rehearsals, performances and Fourth of July evening fireworks are scheduled.
On July 3, no DCA flights are scheduled for several hours in the early afternoon. On July 4, no DCA flights are scheduled after noon. Terminal services will operate at reduced capacity until flights resume on July 5.
Airport officials said there are no approved locations to view fireworks on airport property.
Pedestrian access from the Reagan National Metro station to Gravelly Point will be marked with signage. Airport parking for non-airline travel purposes is expected to be extremely limited.
Passenger guidance related to the events is subject to change. Travelers can find the latest information about airport impacts at flyreagan.com.
