Red Top Cab's Jerome Green is Taxi Driver of Year

Jerome Green of Red Top Cab in Arlington has been named 2012 Taxicab Driver of the Year by the Taxicab, Limousine & Paratransit Association (TLPA).

To members of his community, Green is much more than just an exceptional taxicab driver. When 93-year-old Ms. Thomas needed someone to take her the few miles to her job every weekday, it was Green who offered to drive her. When the same Ms. Thomas fell inside her home, breaking her leg, it was Green who alerted authorities that something was wrong when she didn’t show up two consecutive mornings in a row. When the local Arlington Science Focus School (ASFS) needed someone to transport ESL students to a before-school program so they could practice their reading and writing, Green volunteered his services free of charge.

“Over the years, Jerome has given up hundreds of hours of income in order to bring students to school and allow them to participate in this extra program,” said Sharon Schafer, the reading specialist at ASFS. “He is a true hero in our community.”

Alfred LaGasse, Chief Executive Officer of the TLPA, said Green epitomizes what it means to be an extraordinary taxicab driver who truly puts his passengers’ needs before his own.

“To anyone who has ever had the honor of meeting Jerome, it’s obvious just how much he cares about others,” LaGasse said. “From ‘his students,’ who he has been driving to ASFS for the past seven years so they can participate in the tutoring program, to his regulars, Green has always gone above and beyond what is expected of a driver.”

In 1973, Green started driving a cab on evenings and weekends to supplement his income before becoming a full time driver for Red Top Cab of Arlington in 1987.

When Green isn’t driving his cab, he’s out driving golf balls or cheering on his favorite team, the Washington Redskins.
