Arlington Man Charged After Police Say He Advanced With Broken Bottle

ARLINGTON, VA — An Arlington man was charged with attempted malicious wounding of a police officer after authorities said he advanced toward an officer while holding a broken glass bottle Saturday morning.

Arlington County Police were called around 11 a.m. Saturday to the 2700 block of Wilson Boulevard for a report of an assault.

Police said a man had entered a business, broke a glass bottle and began waving it around.

Responding officers found the man outside the business and gave him commands that police said he ignored. The man then advanced toward an officer while holding the broken bottle, according to police.

An officer deployed a Taser, and with the arrival of an additional officer, police took the man into custody.

Juan Francisco Melendez Melendez, 47, of Arlington, was arrested and charged with attempted malicious wounding of police, destruction of property and disorderly conduct.

Police did not report any injuries in the incident.
