Arlington Man Sets Antarctica Running Record

And he'll be trying to beat the records in all the other six continents this week.

Arlington resident and world-renowned "ultrarunner" Michael Wardian has just set a record for the fastest marathon run in Antarctica, and he's going to conquer the other six continents this week. Yes, really.

Wardian participated in the 2017 World Marathon Challenge and posted a time of 2:54.54 on Monday in Antarctica, which is a record for the continent, WMC said in a Facebook post.

Wardian also finished first in the South American leg on Tuesday, posting a time of 2:45:42.

It's part of an insane challenge that involves running seven marathons in all seven continents in just seven days. Wardian is joined by just 32 other runners for the challenge, according to the Washington Post.

His first two times shattered the event's record average marathon time of 3:32:25, which was set last January. Wardian, 42, is a prolific runner who last year ran 1,254.65 miles in 47 races, according to the Post.

Wardian was in Punta Arenas in Chile Tuesday for the South American run, in which he finished first again. On Wednesday, he will head to Miami for the North American run, followed by a marathon in Madrid, Spain on Thursday for the European run. He'll then head to Marrakech, Morocco on Friday to conquer the African leg, and then on to Dubai on Saturday in the United Arab Emirates for the Asia leg. Finally, he'll head to Sydney, Australia on Sunday for the last run.

The entry fee for the tournament is close to $40,000, so it's certainly not for the casual runner.
