Arlington Metro Riders Get Screwed Again: Surge 5 Starts Wednesday [VIDEO]

Metro is in the midst of a year-long SafeTrack plan to fix chronic safety problems system-wide.

It's been a whole two weeks since riders on the Orange and Silver lines have had to deal with a "Surge" involving continuous single-tracking or an entire line segment shutdown, and now WMATA will be putting commuters on those lines through the ringer once again starting Wednesday.

It'll be a 12-day ordeal this time for Orange and Silver line riders, as there will be continuous single-tracking between the East Falls Church and Ballston stations from July 20-31.

That means Orange Line trains between Vienna and Ballston will operate every 18 minutes, with additional Orange Line trains operating between Ballston and New Carrollton only.

Silver Line riders will also enjoy 18-minute waits.

As always, after 10 p.m. the delay between trains will extend to 20 minutes.

Here are the stations most affected by Surge 5: Vienna, Dunn Loring, West Falls Church, Ballston, East Falls Church, Wiehle-Reston East, Spring Hill, Greensboro, Tysons Corner, McLean.

In addition to the long waits, trains will be "extremely crowded," WMATA says, especially during rush hour.

Once again, Metro is begging riders to not use their service.

"Metro riders who have the ability to do so should consider alternate travel options and avoid traveling during rush hour if possible," WMATA states.
