Few Interruptions Expected During $4.8M Renovations On Arlington County Government Center

ARLINGTON, VA — Arlington County will begin a $4.8 million renovation project on its government center on Clarendon Boulevard in the Courthouse area on Monday, Sept. 20. The building will remain open during the work, which is scheduled to be completed in January 2023.

Lower-floor public service counters like voter registration, the Arlington County Treasurer’s Office, and the Commissioner of Revenue’s Office will continue operating during construction with directional signs in common areas to guide visitors to the offices.

Starting Sept. 27, the Treasurer’s Office will be located on the first floor of the Ellen M. Bozman Government Center to allow people to make in-person payments for their real estate and vehicle taxes through the Oct. 5 due date.

Arlington County is doing the renovations to make better use of the space in the building. The work will include a new reception area on the lobby level, additional conference rooms and security enhancements.

The county also will add a children’s area to the Arlington Public Library’s Plaza Branch in the lobby of the building. The library branch, which has not reopened since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, will be closed to the public during construction.

Work also will be done on the government center’s garage-level elevator bays.

Funding for the project came from a tenant improvement allowance that the government center’s landlord, JBG Smith, provided to the county following a lease renewal in 2018.

Arlington County owns the land under the government center, while JBG Smith owns the building.

A letter of intent to restructure the lease agreement, announced in March, could extend the current expiration date from 2062 to 2119.
