Arlingtonians Mock 'National Landing' Name For Crystal City
Amazon's imminent arrival has resulted in the rebranding of Crystal City (and parts of Pentagon City and Alexandria) as National Landing.

ARLINGTON, VA -- When Amazon officially announced this week that it would put half of its second headquarters in Crystal City, that didn't come as a surprise to Arlingtonians as the news had leaked a while ago -- and even before then, Crystal City was cited as a frontrunner in news reports. But what did come as a surprise was that the area would be renamed, and the new name is causing a little mockery among locals.
As Amazon promises to bring in 25,000 new jobs and $2.5 billion in investment, completely altering the landscape of Crystal City, the announcement came down that the neighborhood -- along with parts of Pentagon City and Potomac Yard in Alexandria -- would be renamed "National Landing."
This two-and-a-half-mile stretch will have three Metro stations -- Pentagon City, Crystal City, and Reagan Airport. It will get a fourth when the Potomac Yard station opens.

The proposal includes splitting the area up into three districts: the North District (part of Pentagon City), the Central District (Crystal City) and the South District (Pentagon Row).

Beyond concerns about traffic and a huge rise in the cost of living in an already expensive area, some are doubtful about the new name of "National Landing." At the very least, it will take a little while for residents to get used to it -- and many are already taking to social media to poke fun at it.

Ultimate local branding synergy: Washington Nationals leave D.C., have Virginia build them a stadium in National Landing, run promotional ad campaign touting the move ("Nationals Landing Soon!") and then rename themselves the National Landing Nationals. You're welcome.
