Wisdom from the John! ... Dr. J B Whitlow
In this blog I try to give a small insight into the function of a chiropractor.

Hello, I am Dr. J B Whitlow and I am a Chiropractor. My office is in Arlington on Old Dominion Drive. You can see in my ‘Bio’ that I have practiced in this area for 16 years. I became a chiropractor after a horrible traffic accident had severely debilitated me. After treatment with a fantastic chiropractor I was able to live and function pretty much as I had before.
So, not everybody knows what we chiropractors can do, nor how we actually do what we do. Maybe this article will help you to know more.
- Chiropractically Speaking The cause of dis-ease is IN the person afflicted.
- The function of every cell tissue and organ is controlled by the brain through nerve impulses.
- Any interference with the free flow of those impulses results in impaired or abnormal body or organ function
- This is DIS-EASE
Interference can be produced by misaligned vertebrae causing swelling (physiological changes) that interfere with the nerves at the point where they pass out from the spinal cord to the vital organs and limbs in our bodies. The job of a trained Chiropractor is to locate the exact point of interference and by adjusting the SUBLUXATION, or misaligned vertebra, removing the pressure on the afflicted nerve and thus allowing the free flow of mental impulses to and from all parts of the body.

To illustrate this, think of a garden hose with a kink in it, if you remove the kink in the hose, water flows unimpeded into your garden allowing your plants to flourish. Should the kink remain in the hose, not enough water will reach your plants, causing them to both whither and die over time!
We tend to think of the spine being just the solid infrastructure holding our heads on top of our bodies. But more than this, it is the intricately formed conduit of all our nerves from the brain to each and every cell, tissue and organ. When we bend and twist, lift and strain, fall, get bumped or jarred, our spines are adversely affected in any number of ways.

Chiropractically Speaking anybody who has nerves needs their body maintained periodically, symptoms or not! That extra heavy turkey pulled out from the oven over Christmas may have given you a more lasting effect than the 2-3 pounds visible on the bathroom scale!
Think about having a visit with a chiropractor when the symptoms you are experiencing are neurologically caused. The very first chiropractic adjustment in 1895, by D. D. Palmer, actually reversed a man’s deafness! A janitor had injured his back in the stairwell in the building where Dr. Palmer worked, he had complained of deafness for 17 years. Dr. D. D. Palmer examined him, found a subluxation in the poor man’s back, adjusted the misalignment and the janitor’s hearing was restored!
So not all Chiropractors are created equal! We are not all cut from the same cloth.
I practice the GONSTEAD method of Chiropractic. As a young man, Clarence Gonstead developed rheumatoid arthritis; he was confined to bed until he was relieved of all symptoms by a chiropractor. He was so impressed that he decided to become trained himself. He advanced the thinking of chiropractic care by applying engineering principles. If the base of a structure is unsound, the building will be unsound. The base of the spine is the pelvis and sacrum, if it is subluxated or misaligned, how can the spinal column be sound?
A chiropractor reduces or removes interference of nerve function allowing the body to heal itself.
Chiropractic Quick Facts
- Spinal adjusting has been traced back to the times of Hippocrates.
- The first chiropractic adjustment was given by D. D. Palmer in 1895.
- An estimated 19.5 million people visit doctors of chiropractic in the United States each year.
- Chiropractic is restorative care.
- While chiropractors assist many people who have suffered injuries or have been involved in accidents, chiropractic care is concerned with the patient’s overall neurological well being.
One of Dr. Palmer's patients, a minister, is credited with creating the name "Chiropractic" for this new art and science of manipulation. He took the Greek words for "hand" (cheiros) and "done by" (praktos) and put them together to create Chiropractic, meaning "done by hand".
