ARLINGTON, VA — The Critical Accident Team of the Arlington County Police Department is investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that took place Friday evening in the Shirlington area, according to a police release.

Around 7:44 p.m., officers were dispatched for multiple reports of a crash with injuries in the area of Walter Reed Drive and S. Wakefield Street. A preliminary investigation revealed that a motorcyclist was heading southbound on Walter Reed Drive at a high rate of speed when he lost control, struck a pole, and was thrown from the vehicle.

ACPD identified the motorcyclist as Gilberto Portillo-Solorzano, 27, of Arlington. He was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for life-threatening injuries, but later succumbed to his injuries, and was pronounced dead.
