Heavy Rains Soak NoVA, With More Weekend Storms In The Forecast

Storms brought more heavy rains to the D.C. area Friday morning, causing flooding of roads and wet basements.

NORTHERN VIRGINIA/DC — Storms brought heavy rains to the D.C. area Friday morning, causing flooding of roads and water to flow into basements. Due to an extremely wet past few weeks, the ground remains too saturated in many areas to soak in more rain.

In D.C., total rainfall now stands at 7.99 inches of rain for the first three weeks of August, compared to 3.25 inches for the entire month’s average, according to the Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang.

Some areas around D.C. and Northern Virginia have seen near 10 inches or rain over the last few weeks, according to the Capital Weather Gang.

The weekend could bring more severe weather to Northern Virginia and D.C., with the possibility of thunderstorms on both Saturday and Sunday. A short break in the rainy weather pattern is forecast for Monday and Tuesday.

Here's the forecast for Northern Virginia for the next few days:

Saturday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 5 p.m. Otherwise, partly sunny, with a high near 84. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Saturday night: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 8 p.m., then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 70. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Sunday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 86. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent.

Sunday night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 2 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 72. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent.

Monday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 89.
