Governor Announces Huge 156-Mile Bike Ride From Richmond to Rosslyn

"RVA to DC" is coming in July, and is envisioned to be an annual event.

Governor Terry McAuliffe has announced the creation of "RVA to DC," a two-day bicycle ride in July that will take cyclists from Richmond to Arlington.

The event is an attempt to promote bike and pedestrian safety, as well as infrastructure projects throughout Virginia, and it will take place on July 23-24, according to a statement from Sports Backers, which is organizing the event.

McAuliffe said in the statement that he hopes RVA to DC will become an event that "will continue for many years to come.

"This is a tremendous opportunity to showcase Virginia’s natural beauty, thriving communities, and world-class tourist destinations," he continued. "It's also a great example of how we are building a new Virginia economy through teamwork and strategic investments that improve the quality of life for our citizens and attract thousands of visitors to the Commonwealth every year."

The ride will begin at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond and will traverse 156 miles, ending at Rosslyn near the Key Bridge.

"On day one, riders will travel 75 miles through Lakeside, U.S. Bike Route 1, Ashland, and Caroline and Spotsylvania counties before ending on a paved multi-use trail in Old Mill Park in downtown Fredericksburg along the Rappahannock River," the statement adds. "Day two will take riders across the Rappahannock into Stafford County and Quantico for 35 miles of rural riding and paved trails, followed by low-speed roads through Manassas before a totally unbroken network of paved trails in Centerville at mile 46."
