Local Laughs Abound at The Comedy Spot

In the mood to laugh? Check out the weekly shows and other opportunities at Ballston's The Comedy Spot.

Looking for some improv comedy but don’t want to make the trip into D.C.? Enter , located inside Ballston Common Mall (4238 Wilson Blvd.). In addition to improv shows, The Comedy Spot offers open mic nights, birthday party packages and corporate events, among other opportunities.

Each Friday and Saturday night, guests can choose from a family show (“ComedySportz”) and an adult show (“The Blue Show”). “Having both of these shows in one night makes us unique,” said Liz Demery, artistic director and owner of The Comedy Spot.

Tickets for each show are $15, and The Comedy Spot offers a half-price discount on tickets for “The Blue Show” for guests attending both the “ComedySportz” and “The Blue Show” performances on the same evening. Visit http://www.comedyindc.com/twofer.htm for more details on this special offer.

Demery noted that “ComedySportz” and “The Blue Show” performances are tailored to the audience. “We choose ahead of time what games we’re going to play, but then we’ll go from there based on the audience interaction,” she explained. “With ‘The Blue Show,’ we can tailor it to be cheesy but not dirty if people just want an escape,” she said.

The club, which has two stages, also offers free open mic nights on Thursday nights. Also on select Thursday nights, Maria Falzone, a popular speaker at the college level, performs “Sex Rules,” a humorous, informative act for adults on the topic of safe sex. Check The Comedy Spot calendar for women-only shows and shows for both men and women.

On Saturday afternoons, The Comedy Spot hosts “ComedySportz for Kids,” a kid-friendly show that incorporates short-form improv games. Kids have the opportunity to either watch the show or be involved as participants.

The club also offers birthday parties for kids, “which are really popular,” said Demery. The birthday party package includes a party onstage after the show.

Or, if you’d like an event tailored to your specific needs, The Comedy Spot can create custom comedy events. For more details, call the club’s cell phone number at (703) 509-9526.
