Oktoberfest, Arlington Style: Beers, Brats and a Rousing Good Time

Capitol-izing on the Oktoberfest spirit, Arlington brewpub will host twelfth annual beer festival with German music and food.

While Germany's Oktoberfest lasts just 17 days: America's tends to stretch from mid-September through the end of October. This Saturday, bust out your lederhosen and dirndls once more and head to the Village at Shirlington for the twelfth annual Capitol City Mid-Atlantic Oktoberfest.

Capitol City Brewing Company (2700 S. Quincy St., Arlington, Va.) organizers expect 850 guests from noon-7 p.m., with taps shutting off at 6 p.m. The $25 admission includes a souvenir mug and tickets for 10 beers, (4-oz. pours). If you’re still thirsty, you can pay $5 for a book of five more tickets. “Each beer is $1 no matter if it’s Miller Lite or Delirium Tremens,” said Mike McCarthy, head brewer at Capitol City. “Last year we had 51 breweries and this year we have added 18 additional tents to the festivities.”

“The event is free to anyone who just wants to come in and soak up the Germanic atmosphere, but you will need to purchase a wrist band if you decide to eat or drink,” said McCarthy.

“The more than 8,500 revelers expected will be able to drink and sample more than 100 different beers of the world's great ales and lagers from 40 different breweries that will provide two different beer styles each,” said McCarthy. “We will be pouring our popular seasonal Oktoberfest Lager and our Pumpkinator,” he added.

The eclectic assortment of food will include traditional Oktoberfest fare like brats and sauerkraut, as well as corndogs and desserts from a variety of food vendors and a range of the restaurants in Shirlington. Authentic German folk music will be provided by local DJ Exclusively Entertainment.

It’s their largest location to date and showcases a state-of-the-art brewing system that can be viewed from the sidewalk. (Urban Adventures, Capitol City’s parent corporation, also operates the recently opened restaurant 901 in downtown DC.)
