President Obama Just Created a New DC Monument [VIDEO]
The Sewall-Belmont House near the U.S. Capitol has been the National Woman's Party's headquarters since 1929.
It's a small, non-descript brick building on a street corner just a block from the U.S. Capitol -- but now it's the newest national monument, thanks to President Obama.
The Sewall-Belmont House, which sits on the corner of Constitution Avenue NE and 2nd Street NE in the shadow of the Hart Senate Office Building, has served as the headquarters of the National Woman's Party since 1929. Now, Obama has designated it as the new Belmont-Paul Women's Equality National Monument -- fittingly, on "Equal Pay Day" (April 12), the day each year that "marks when the average woman's earnings catch up to what a man earned in the previous year," the White House said on its Facebook page.
"Tomorrow’s designation will permanently protect one of the oldest standing houses near the U.S. Capitol and help preserve an extensive archival collection that documents the history, strategies, tactics and accomplishments of the movement to secure women's suffrage and equal rights in the United States and across the globe," the White House said in a statement.

The house is named for former Woman's Party president Alva Belmont and party founder Alice Paul.
The White House plans on conducting a summit next month titled, "The United States of Women," which will focus on " the progress made by and for women and girls domestically and internationally over the course of this Administration and to discuss solutions to the challenges they still face," the statement reads.
