Steve Jobs. Bill Gates. Mark Zuckerberg. Pioneers of modern communication and how we use computers, no doubt. But what about Douglas Engelbart, who passed away in 2013 at age 88? Most people have never heard of him. But you have Mr. Engelbart to thank for being able to click on this blog with your computer mouse, read this on a screen (let alone on the Internet), type on an external keyboard, and use computers for everyday communications (like blogs) in the first place, and not just for number crunching.
Engineer Douglas Engelbart founded an electronics development lab called the Augmentation Research Center (ARC) in California in the early 1960s. Engelbart and his ARC team invented many of the tools we take for granted today, like graphical interfaces on bitmapped screens, hypertext, shared networks, desktop keyboards and – yes – the mouse! And within a few years, the personal computer revolution had begun, forever changing how the world works, plays and communicates. The problem is, he didn’t aggressively promote these ideas as his own, and others simply copied them – for monumental profit.
Having a revolutionary idea or product isn’t enough…to see real rewards, you have to trumpet that idea or product from the mountaintops. With help from ECU Communications, you can do just that, through leading-edge branding and awareness campaigns and targeted messaging. And, of course, with more than a little help from dear Mr. Engelbart.
